No it will not work. You need the The 5 Shot J1-357/38 Speed Loader. They are custom designed to fit: Smith & Wesson - 37, 38, 40, & 49 Charter Arms - .357 Taurus - 85, 605, 651, & 851 Rossi - 68 Ruger - SP101

It's a six cylinder speed loader. The S&W performance center 686 I just looked up has seven cylinders so no in that case.
