Introducing Go: Build Reliable, Scalable Programs

I am an expert programmer in C and C++. I tried to learn Go with other books, but they use examples that are overly complex.Introducing Go is an excellent introduction, because it gives simple examples of each concept in a logical progression. This enables the author to cover a lot of ground quickly and clearly, so the pages turn quickly and I remember the concepts after the first reading. This is how I would summarize the concepts for myself.

This book is a very short, quick overview of the entire language of Go. Without the appendices and index it is just 98 pages. I read it all in a single evening - I think it took me about 3 hours. That said, it covered all the major syntax and parts of the language, giving nice to the point examples to illustrate things.I'm an experienced programmer (python, R, C++), who was brand new to Go. So for me it covered enough that I could start reading through Go projects on GIthub, and be able to follow along.I'm reading "The Go Programming Language" now, which is covering the same topics in 350 pages, so you get all the details and caveats. You could even think of this book as a nice 0th chapter to TGPL, giving a tour of the language.

"Introducing Go" does exactly what the title says; it introduces the Go programming language. Caleb's writing style is easy to understand. The examples are clear and convey the point. If you have programmed in any C based language before "Introducing Go" will quickly get you up to speed. You do not need to be an expert coder to learn Google's new systems programming language. Highly recommended!

Very good concise introduction to Go. I've read a handful of Go books and this is one of the best introductions.I recommend this book as a first read that will enable you to understand other texts like "Go In Action" or "The Go Programming Language"

I realize this was an "introduction" book, but this was extremely elementary. I was hoping this would be more technical. In reality, this book is basically a rewrite of the Go docs. Save yourself the $20 and just read through the official Go documentation. It's really well written and it's free!With that being said, this book is well written and the pages are of a decent weight paper. The code examples, although basic, work, and the author does a good job explaining things.Again, I would save the $20 and just read the docs. This isn't worth the price.

Bought it to support the author. I feel like I need to read it again because I have no familiarity with strongly typed programming languages like this.This book is far easier to understand than some of the other books on Go that I’ve seen but I don’t really know where to go next. I am not a great programmer. I have something I want to write in Go but it will take a few additional resources before I find my footing.Also, this book could have used a chapter on the Go toolset. Clocking in at just around 100 pages, there could be more documentation on “go build,” “go get,” etc.

I wish all programming books were this succinct. I guess that's a tribute to the Go language designers, too. Great stuff.

If you already have a background in programming the book should suite you just fine. However if you are a complete beginner the book will feel a bit overwhelming at times.
