Definitely not safe for that. Search Etsy for a bed that can support one - they’re not cheap, though. Easier to hang it from the ceiling or get a swing stand wide enough to straddle the bed

what thickness do you recommend for the mattress for this bed?

It depends on you. Whatever you prefer. I have a mattress and boxspring on mine. And I bought the bed risers so it could be ever higher.
