Does it come with sand

Yes. It comes with sand and a mat to put under the box. Fabulous gift that provided entertainment during the winter months.

I purchased this little sand box for my grandson, he absolutly loves it. its very calmimg, he can and dose use his imagination. my son inlaw loved it as well.

Is there a lid... so that everything can just stay contained for storage?

There is no lid; however the wooden box is fairly deep, so, as a result the sand and other toys and objects stay inside. I have always stored the whole toy in a cloth bag to keep everything together. Hope this helps.
