Noir: The Romance of Black in 19th-Century French Drawings and Prints.
Charcoal and conté crayon drawing has always been a passion of mine, so this survey of black and white works by 19th century French artists is very much to my taste.A good solid hardback exhibition catalogue, illustrations of over 60 works in the show are included together with many comparative examples and supporting photographic illustrations; the works are by Realists, Romanticists, Symbolists and early Modernists such as Degas and Seurat. The qualities and techniques of 19th century charcoal, conté crayons and print-making is explored and analysed.A very good book for those of us interested in graphic media at a time of great change in ideas about art and the advancement of new materials.Do use the “Look inside” option above if it is available.
