Rolls PM351 Personal Monitor Station

Bought this unit after a gig with a keyboard player had one...a gig where I was playing drums and singing leads, but the leader didn't think to bring a monitor for. Hello?! You hired me because I also sing! Anyway, I was not familiar with the unit before that and decided I need to bring my own insurance from now on. Ordered one first from another online supplier but then found that Amazon offered free one day shipping for me, so I ordered another from them because I was leaving town in two days for a gig and wanted to bring it along. I did get it right on time and took it along for the trip, but didn't get the the opportunity to use it that time. So when I returned home I had the 2nd unit (the one I ordered first!) that had to be returned, unopened, or resold, since I only needed one. I decided not to do what I always do and procrastinate, so I gave it to our mail carrier to return. I finally had the chance to use it at one of my rehearsals, which I recorded, and it worked like a charm! I love it. I usually struggle at hearing myself singing at the rehearsals, but with the Rolls PM351 I was thrilled to hear everything I was singing BEFORE hearing it coming out of the PA speakers. Not only was I hearing myself and hitting the notes better, but I also wasn't straining my voice, something that is hard for me NOT to do at a rehearsal with a 7 pc band! I don't play guitar on stage (yet), but I occassionally play some keys, and having the extra instrument input is something I look forward to utilizing. The other feature I look forward to using is the separate 'Line In' mix that will allow a third, separate volume-controlled mix from any source via 1/4" connector, ie: overall board mix or monitor send of all vocals for blending. My issue with the unit is having to be teathered to it via my in ears or ear buds. When I'm performing in one of a couple of my bands where I'm up front singing leads it just won't be practical to use, and sadly I'll have to either rely on the floor wedges or other in ears that are much harder on my already challenged hearing from too much loud music all my life. I've since had someone tell me he wants this exact unit after showing him mine. I now wish I would have kept my other unit and sold it to him. I could have gotten my money back quicker! Haha Now, if I can just figure out how to make the PM 351 wireless...

We switched from the big wedge monitors to the in-ear approach for our worship band. Our church had graciously provided Behringer personal monitor mixers for each musician, but I was not totally pleased with the sound quality of these. Thought I'd get my own. Some searching and review reading I uncovered the Rolls PM351. So . . . the first PM351 I received looked like a refurbished unit when I opened the box, a little scratched up, and it had a noticeable hum. Supplier very quickly provided a replacement with absolutely no haggle. Very impressed with that. Second unit works perfectly. As with all Rolls products this looks to be a very high quality device. Sturdy all metal enclosure and durable controls. I particularly like the schematic right on the top of the box for all the ins and outs. Ground lift and stereo-mono jumpers can be reset using a pair of tweezers - takes a bit of practice to manipulate these - but once set they do the job. Two headphone outs (1/4" and 3.5 mm) are convenient. Sits nicely on my keyboard, looks good and enables volume control of the complete stage monitor mix plus the output from my keyboard. Also has a vocal mic channel and level control should that be needed. Sound quality is excellent. Also this unit came very well packaged which should minimize risk of damage during shipping. Definitely worth the investment. Well done, Rolls! This is my three years later update. This product spends its days and nights on my keyboard and gets used during every practice session here in my home. Then I haul it and all my keyboard support stuff to our church to do four worship services on weekends. This little box is still working fine. No hum, prefect stereo sound to my in-ears. Even the wall wart power supply and cable has survived this kinda rugged life. Every electronic product should work this well. Score a big A+ to the folks at Rolls for this fine product.

I recently purchased this unit to set up an IEM system for my guitar rig. I play electric guitar in my church's worship band. I run direct into the sound system with a Line 6 POD X3 Live and a selection of other pedals. I was using a Tech 21 Power Engine active speaker cabinet as my guitar monitor as I am not a fan of my guitar tone coming back from our monitor mix, but we started having problems with stage volume. That's where the Rolls PM351 comes in... Our monitor mixes on stage are controlled at each station with Aviom mixers. Most of our singers and musicians use IEMs directly out of those units. The PM351 allows me to blend the direct signal from my POD (pre-monitor mix) with the Aviom output into a set of headphones or IEMs. The sound is fantastic. Even with some cheap Skullcandy Ink'd ear buds, my guitar reference tone sounds great. I mix everyone else in the Aviom (making sure to turn myself off in the mix) and then balance the signal levels with the PM351 volume controls. Perfect solution. The Rolls PM351 Personal Monitor Mixer is an excellent product. Solid build. Metal casing. Low signal/noise ratio. High output (my volumes are set at about 10 o'clock). Easily powered by the supplied 12V adapter or by a pedalboard power supply. I have also found a significant signal boost from its XLR direct out versus the POD direct output. This makes my tone and overall signal much better when it reaches the soundboard. I have two small quality concerns... When I received my PM351, I noticed that it would not sit flat on a table top. The housing was screwed together crooked so it sits uneven. Not a big deal to me though as I attached mine to my pedalboard with velcro. My other concern is the longevity of the headphone jacks. They appear to be plastic and simply board mounted. This may never pose a problem though as long as I don't abuse the jacks too much. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Rolls PM351. At under $75, this provides excellent bang for the buck. I would highly recommend this to any musician using headsets/IEMs who would like to hear their true unadultered sound/tone in their ears while still maintaining the rest of the monitor mix.

The Rolls PM351 works as described, but not in the way I would have liked, and with some added noise. Admittedly, I was expecting some added noise. It's a low priced unit, though I was hoping that the internal isolation transformers would keep the noise to a minimum. I'm also a little disappointed that the XLR outputs only carry the instrument channel. This limits what the unit can do. The Mic and Line inputs are only outputted through the headphone out. The unit seems solidly built. It's in a metal case, with clearly marked controls. The ground lift and stereo/mono switches are a little difficult to operate, as they are inset. I needed to use a pen tip to switch them. And a schematic would have been nice to have, so I could have known before hand that the mic signal does not go through the XLR outputs, though admittedly, that is mentioned in the manual. I'm using the unit to grab my guitar and mic signals, before they go to the amp and PA, to drive my wireless IEMs. I find it difficult to walk to the other side of the stage to adjust the mix to my in-ear monitor during the band's performance. Having the mix controls next to me is much more convenient. During practice last night, I was getting some "crackle" through the guitar amp, though that may have been the amp itself. There was some hum in my monitor, which I confirmed today, wiring it per the attached pic. I may opt for the Rolls DB24 DI, which may better match the headphone output to my wireless line inputs. But I'm not sure that will address the hum, which seems to be coming directly out of the headphone outs of the PM351, as it's still there when I plug the headphones directly in. I would also have preferred a standard power cable, without a wall wart. But I suppose that was done to separate the power transformer from the audio in the box to help minimize noise. Again, for the price, it's something I can live with. A power switch would have also been nice. Of course adding a power switch costs money, though I think it would have helped with functionality. Overall, it works, and so long as the reduction in sound quality is not passed through to the band's PA, and I can keep the sound from my guitar clean through my amp, I'll be happy with the purchase. I'll be gigging with the device in a couple of weeks to confirm.

Works as expected, good build quality. this box allows you to have control over your IEMs. You control the volume of your own instrument, voice and the monitor mix sent from the board.

The PM351 is perfect for an instrumentalist who sings. You can control the volume of your mic, your instrument, and your monitor mix. The instrument input can be mono or stereo. A standard guitar pedal board power supply will work. You can also send the power down the RING (TRS) of the monitor input. A device like this or it's little brother the PM50s, will save you hundreds of dollars by eliminating the need for a wireless in-ear system. I used electrical tape to attach a Radio Shack 1/8" extension cord to my guitar cable. It's practically invisible and impervious to RF interference. No batteries needed. For the guitarist, you can use the line out from the amp, output from an effects unit, or something like the Hughes and Kettner Redbox to feed the PM351. Any of those levels worked perfectly. None of the knobs need to be higher than 1/2 way up to provide all the volume you would ever need. I have only heard it with cheap in-ear monitors; the custom-made ones are still being made. Even with a $10 earphone, the PM351 is clear and can be louder than you'd ever need. I would strongly recommend the Rolls over other units which might cost a little less.

I play bass and keyboards in a dance cover trio, and also sing backup. I was considering buying a wedge monitor to hear myself better, but after researching this and the other Rolls gadgets, along with the ART and Behringer ones, decided to buy this one. I'm thrilled that I did. Wasn't sure about the extra cost for the added line input, but thought it would come in handy for a click track or anything else I might want to do in the future. I got to try my setup at rehearsal and the results were awesome. I was able to sing my parts with so much more confidence and accuracy just from having my own voice right in my ear. I paired these up with a pair of MEElectronics M6-CL-MEE Sport Noise-Isolating In-Ear Headphones with Memory Wire (Clear) from Amazon for $20 (also VERY happy with those, highly recommend!) In my setup I run my Sure SM58 into a TC Helicon doubler pedal and then into the PM351 (with a really short xlr jumper cable I also got on Amazon). From there it goes into the board. For rehearsal, I did not use a monitor send back into the PM351 but will try that at my next gig. I plug a mini-jack headphone extension cable into the PM351 and plug the in-ear monitors into the extension to give myself room to get funky. The ear buds have nice memory wire and run over the ears and down your back. They have a little clip that I clip on the back of my shirt collar. Wireless in-ear monitors are awesome on TV and for rock stars, but after careful consideration, I realized that 90% of my gigs have stages so small that I barely get to giggle around much at all. Having a thin cable running to the PM351 is no worse than my bass guitar's cable. And they both run to my pedal board in front of me so it's not a hassle at all. I have all my effects velcro'd down on my pedal board for ease of set up. (It will also run on 9 volts from my One Spot) The PM351 is very load and I had to turn it way down. I also only used one ear bud since we don't mic everything in rehearsal. Just having my own voice in my one ear at just the right volume was a huge help with my singing and i know the gigs will be that much better just from that. The TC Helicon (I love!) helps thicken up my backup vocals and sometimes I use the Octave Up setting that can be hard to sing with without hearing yourself clearly. With this setup I can nail the right note and octave and hear exactly what is coming out of the TC Helicon. This is all WAY better and cheaper than lugging around a wedge monitor. Our drummer is also going to get the exact same setup I have! Highly recommend!

Small, Compact, Unobtrusive, and perfect for listening to yourself, your instrument, and your mix while at the micropnone for live or recording. Only thing you need close is a plug to plug it in. The quality of sound is.was rignt on for me and I am 60 and have 'military ears.' The additional purchase of the mic stand mount makes it even easier to use although you can place it our of the way on a table or desk. It is no nosense, no frills, MADE IN USA, and it works, Don't le the little jumpers bother you. For most of us we can just leave them alone. Read The Instructions GUYS !!! As A GUY I can only say it might prove valuable to actually read the fine print.... The price is great for the value. IT is a professional quality piece of hardware so;d by a Professional Vendor. Everything was on the spot, documented, packed, and delivered on time as promised.

My brother and I are a dual and we needed to find a product that wasn't beyond our budget, and still be a quality made product! The product is well built and sturdy! The personal monitors are going to be very useful to us as we have made all our backing tracts...and we each have our own particular desire to hear the music tailored to the way we each listen to our music! We tried the personal monitors and the reproduction was very much to our liking..very clean and noise free! We are very excited, as it helps us move one step closer to actualizing our Dream! I love it! So much so that I bought 3 all at once. It blew away everyone in the band. It was the first time we used an in ear personal monitor and from now on we can never play without in ears. Rolls is the inexpensive and best alternative for all the ridiculously priced high end systems in the market. 200% highly recommended!

I have the smaller version of this preamp as well. Great quality and perfect for a drummer. Can run my mic thru this as well as my electronic drums, which allows me to control my own in-ear level.

The PM351 functions as expected but when you turn the volume knobs up, there is a lot of noise (hums and hiss), even with nothing plugged in. I even tried a different power adaptor meant for an effects pedal (within the required input voltage) and though it was better, there was still some noise. I was ready to return this, then I read that other Rolls units that can be powered by a 9 volt battery. So as a test, I rigged up a DC plug with a 9 volt battery, plugged it in and the noise is gone! The issue is that the Rolls for some reason gets noisy when using a power adaptor. So for a permanant solution, I bought a 8 AA battery holder with a DC plug. I have lots of rechargeable Nimh batteries lying around and wanted something with more juice and would last much longer than a regular 9 volt battery. So if your Rolls is noisy like mine, just use battery power and issue is solved.
