Q: What is the width when it isn’t expanded?

The large piece is 12 inch wide and smaller is 11 1/2 inches wide. This is their measurements side by side. Smaller piece fits snugly inside larger one.

Q: Would each step hold a pair of glasses?

Thank you for your interest in Lipper International 8807. Most glasses would fit easily on these shelves, each one is 2.5" deep. This small shelf is expandable as well, and adjusts from a closed position where each level is 12" to an open position where each level is 23". My glasses, that have larger frames, are about 5" wide and take up about 1.75" of horizontal space when laid down. Based on this, I think you could most likely fit two pairs of glasses side by side on each level with the shelves closed. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
