The Complete Guide to ACT English, 2nd Edition

finally - the PERFECT ACT prep book!
I have searched high and low for ACT prep books that will work for my 16 year old son. My son is a great student because he tends to remember what he hears - not because he reads lessons (unfortunately). So, not surprisingly, he does not test well on standardized tests - primarily due to his slow speed and lack of confidence when it comes to reading. If only someone was present to read the ACT test out loud. But, alas, that isn't the case. Add to the reading issue the fact that my son is NOT self-motivated when it comes to academics (tennis, yes), and the overall recipe just doesn't work.Ms. Meltzer's books do EXACTLY what I've been looking for! In "short": (1) her book isn't so "wordy" that it immediately shocks the confidence out of my son, in particular (authors: spacing has SO much to do with this, as do clear and succinct statements); (2) she clearly states the specific types of questions the test-taker needs to recognize and learn how to answer; (3) she outlines the individual topics to learn in a way that is easy to follow; (4) she doesn't give the answers to the example questions within the text immediately following the questions (remember, not self-motivated!); and (5) in the back of the book, she not only gives the correct answer for each question - she also provides a superb explanation of WHY the correct answer is correct, and even states what topic each question tests (thereby allowing us to easily identify topics my son needs to spend more time studying).I've just purchased a second copy of Ms. Meltzer's English book and passed it off to a tutor my son will work with next. The tutor is a long-time English and reading-comprehension teacher and tutor, and she too has raved about the this book.I [obviously] can't say enough good about Ms. Meltzer's book. And the relief of having FINALLY found the perfect book is perhaps even better! Get. the. book.

Erica STRIKES again! Buy this book!
Erica has done it again. After mastering the SAT Writing section, she has now taken her amazing analytical skills to the grammar and rhetoric tested on the ACT English. If you want a high score on the ACT English, this is a MUST buy.I am a professional test prep tutor and this is the book that I use with all of my students! It is easy to use and is broken into topics by the frequency that they are tested. Her lessons are concise and readable. Her insights are priceless. The small investment in this book could reap a lifetime's worth of reward from having admissions options to getting scholarships and financial aid.How to use this book:1. There are only five tests in the red study guide. Take one and compare it to Erica's list of English grammar and rhetoric concepts in the index. Mark your weaknesses.2. Go do those sections of this workbook first. Most sections are less than five pages.3. Take the next test and then see if you improved in the areas that you studied.4. Repeat by doing new sections of her book and then comparing the next test.5. Now for the real kicker - gain speed! The ACT English is a test against the clock, 75 questions in 45 minutes. You MUST average one question every 36 sections. Find the grammar/rhetoric types that you ALWAYS answer correctly. Now go read those sections and see if Erica has something to add to your skill (or at least polish you up a bit). Practice doing those types of questions with confidence and speed!Erica is America's #1 Grammar & Writing Test Prep tutor and many tutors, including me, use her materials. I have hired Erica to tutor me, she is simply that good.Buy this book.Best of luckPhil McCaffrey

35 ON THE ENGLISH SECTION
I GOT A 35 ON THE ENGLISH SECTION WITH THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I was a little hesitant to purchase this book because it was a little pricey, but this book is a must have. Not only will it prepare you well for the ACT, but will also improve your grammar and writing skills in general. The book comes with organized sections that start from the basics and develop into more complex mechanics. Each section starts with the grammar mechanic or rule followed by some examples and an explanation of the example. Immediately following those are small quizzes that test the skills learned from that chapter(answers are in the back).-The book is split into two main sections: grammar and mechanics and context-The book comes with a cheat sheet for those who need a summary after reading the book as well as or those who don't like to read as much-There are two complete tests in the back. THESE ARE MUST DO's(Answers with explanations in the back)-An appendix for the Red ACT book released by Petersons for those who need extra practice. The appendix is organized by skill tested and the question number in the Red ACT book.Overall, this book is the bible for the ACT English Section

Really helped me
I took the ACT a couple of years ago and used this book. There is a practice test in the back of the book that helped a lot. It was instrumental in helping me identify my weak points and led me to achieve the score I wanted. I got a 35 on both the grammar and reading sections due in part to this book. If you put in the work you will see results. Highly recommend.

Really great book. I was first worried that there wouldnt be exercises for each topic but there was plenty. Its easily disgestable and anyone would defintely benefit from this book. A real gold mine.P.S. The 2 full english tests provide explanations for each question so you understand why other options were wrong.
