Best charger we've ever owned
My son ran over the last industrial strength charger with my truck or we'd never know how good this charger is. Solid, high-quality case, great features, reliable operation, intuitive controls. Much better than the last generation of charger we owned before.

horrible product
i was going to buy this from my tool guy but amazon had it for $50 less. so after buying it from amazon i used it on a known bad battery to see if reconditioning was possible. nope. brought it to work as i am a mechanic and my intention for buying this was so i can charge vehicles while there on the lift. our shop charger is in wheels and the cables wont reach when the car is up in the air. so about a two months later i used it in a care at work. that was the next time i worked on a car that needed a charge. about 15 minutes into charging i got an error message ohc, which means overheated. but now the charger is no good and wont work on any battery even days later. just get the same message "ohc". and because it has been more than 30 days i'm screwed. amazon wont take it back for an exchange. and i emailed the company and got no response. i should have paid the extra $50 and bought it from my tool guy. he would have worked with me.

Best instant start and battery recharger EVER!!
I have a large battery on my diesel tractor which I sometimes drain if I forget to turn off the ignition when I stop the engine with the choke. This charger will start my tractor without the delay of charging the battery. After I am done using the tractor I put the charger on overnight and the battery is as good as new in the morning.

Needs better status indication
I bought this charger from a battery dealer when purchasing a humongoid Marine Lifeline AGM Battery - GPL-8DL for my RV camper. This is the only battery I've ever used it on, and since it is so much larger than traditional 12v batteries, your experience and results may vary. My review is based on my experience with this charger used solely on a very large battery. The charger is well-built and appears to function as advertised. There are guides and posts on the back side to wrap both the power cable and battery leads so the unit stores compactly in my trailer without a tangle of cords. I appreciate the fact that it will not send any power to the battery if you accidentally reverse the cables and polarity (unfortunately, I've done that!). The user interface is generally good and easy to understand, but my biggest complaint is regarding how the charger displays the status of the 7-phase charging cycle (screen shot attached). There is an LED display that shows either 1) the charge percentage of the battery, 2) the voltage of the battery, 3) one phase of the charging cycle (Exercising Phase), and 4) Error if one occurs. There is an orange "Charging In Progress" light, and a green "Charging Complete" light. As you can see on the chart, depending on the phase, the orange progress light will either light solid or flash, and the green light will light solid or be off. My biggest complaint is that there is no way to know exactly which phase the charger is in because the light combinations are not unique to each phase. For example, when the orange light is flashing and the green light is solid, are we in Phase 4 or Phase 7? When the orange light is off and the green light is on, are we in Phase 5, or is the charge fully complete (perhaps call it Phase 8)? There is no way to tell. For some reason, the only phase that is indicated on the display is Phase 6 when an "EP" is displayed. For me and my battery, this unit would get 5 stars if it would simply display the phase number so you could tell exactly where the process is. I'm not sure how long it takes to charge a "regular" battery, but perhaps due to the size of my battery, it can take over 24 hours to charge, oftentimes more. I've had the charger connected to my battery for over 48 hours and cannot tell if it's still in Phase 5 or if it's completely done. As a matter of fact, I really have no way to know if I've ever completely gone through all seven phases! Unless I sit and watch the charger to see each phase progress, I can never be sure exactly what phase has been completed, and that may apply to any user, regardless of battery size. Because my battery weighs 156 pounds and is not easily removed, and I store my trailer at a storage yard, the only available periods I have to charge my battery are either directly before or after a trip, and I generally have less than 48 hours to do so. It's rather frustrating not knowing if all the cycles are complete or not, but this may be an issue that those with traditional, smaller batteries will not face, as they may charge much quicker than mine. However, it seems it would be a relatively easy fix to display the current phase number on the unit and remove any doubt.

Excellent
Very happy with quality and durability. I bought a new car last year and the dealer was using this charger on showroom floor. I use it to keep my vehicles batteries charged for the winter, since I dont use the cars for those months. So far it has kept my batteries in peak condition. The chager is durable. I am usaully rough with things and always push the limits of my garage/shop tools and this is meeting my standards and beyond.

Don't last
I work as a professional dealership mechanic and bought this unit as it is the one endorsed by the manufacturer I work for. I use it mostly to keep batteries charged overnight and to keep vehicles powered during extended programming sessions. Functionally it did most of it's job well, but the jump start function is pretty weak and useless. 21 months in I got the OHC overheat failure, I cracked it open to check if the fan had died, and it didn't, I can leave the unit unplugged overnight and plug it in and 5 seconds in I get the OHC fault so it's not actually overheating, rather something just failed in the unit that's beyond my ability to repair. Only a 1 year warranty so it's a paperweight now. I also have a 10A version too that's fine for the moment. But $100 for less than 2 years of service life is unacceptable. These units ought to have a 5yr warranty.

I like this charger
I like this charger. I've only used it on two batteries so far, but I was impressed on how "smart" the charger is, and how it went through different steps in an attempt to charge a bad battery. It also did a good job on improving the charge on a "fully charged" battery in a 2 year old car. The only reason I rated it only 4 stars, is I felt either the manual could be better to help me understand what stage the charger is in, or the charger would benefit from another LED or two, which could communicate to the user, what stage the charger is in. Over all though, I would readily recommend this to anyone, and strongly prefer it over other chargers I have seen and used.

Intelligent design.
I bought this after the latest in a series of Schumacher charger failures. After the most recent occurrence I contacted Schumacher for repair information. I didn't have a receipt and didn't know if I was within their generous two-year warranty period. Not getting the courtesy of a response, I bought the PL2520. I need a charger with 6-volt capability for my vintage Volkswagen. The 2-amp setting is good for outdoor power equipment and my ATV, and the battery boost is always handy. I'm hoping to get some longevity out of this charger, but that remains to be seen. It's been in regular use for a few weeks and performs well. The display is user friendly and the robust cords store cleverly in the base. The cord storage on the Schumacher chargers are snap-on plastic brackets that snap off easier than they snap on and are too small for the cords anyway. I wasn't sure about the lack of a carrying handle but don't miss it at all.
