Q: Is this a rubber ball? I had bad experiences with heavy HARD not bouncing "ball" that can hit the head of the dog and possibly injure your dog.

My Brutus loved this ball, he played with it for hours, and it does bounce, but I never had any problems with it hitting him in the head.... he is a strong aggressive chewer however, and he did manage to tear the hard rubber, and one that comes off, he can chomp the ball inside and get the battery out, and that could seriously injure a dog. if your dog is not overly aggressive at chewing I highly recommend this ball.

Q: Is the noise level modifiable? My blind dog must have really heightened sense of hearing and does not like loud noises.

Two of my dogs love this toy, and it is pretty loud. I don't believe the sound can be softened.

Q: How do you open the ball to replace batteries without tearing it up?

You have to move the little yellow ball around to face an "opening" in the tire. Then you just use a screw driver and unscrew the two screws, replace batteries, and then screw it shut.

Q: I finally managed to get the two screws out but I can't seem to remove the slotted battery cover - how do you remove the slotted cover: does it turn?

You pry it out with a small flat screwdriver. Place it in the slot where the tab for the battery was.
