Powermaster 17078 Chrome Alternator Ford 1G [ext. regulated]

When modding an OG 1967 Ford 352 its hard to describe fit. It fits stock. It worked better, for those who care, with a High Volume water pump. Way more clearance from the block.

I have 80 Bronco with a 351M. I bought this to swap out the old tired 1G alternator. Upon swap, the belt squeaked and I used a thermometer to determine the alternator pulling was reaching 150 degrees Fahrenheit within a minute or two, however, the alternator body stayed in the 110 to 130 range after running for 5-10 minutes. After adjusting the belt to ensure it wasn’t too loose or to tight, checking I was using the right belt, etc. I finally realized the alternator pulley was not providing enough grip for the V belt causing slippage which leads to overheating. I swapped out the old 2V alternator pulley onto this one and the pulley no longer overheats. BEWARE while chrome plated pulleys look clean they DO NOT provide enough grip/friction to hold the V belt in place causing slippage and overheating which lead to me spending a few hours diagnosing the issue I didn’t plan on spending to finally figure this issue out. I can’t speak to the durability of the alternator as I haven’t driven the car yet.

So far so good. Installed on my 78 Mustang I put a big block Ford in. I show and race this car, so looks and dependability are both important. I use the original wiring style the car came with, and the small block alternator on brackets I fabricated. So this direct fit works great. Edit: the alternator failed in just under a year.
