What is the taste difference between the japanese vs. the us made version. i had the us made version but not the japanese....

The differences are minor, the Japanese version, is not as sweet as the American version. Japanese version is also thicker and more authentic. The American version uses more fruit and the Japanese version is more of a tomato and soy sauce flavored BBQ sauce. It is more like Bulldog Tonkatsu sauce without the nutmeg flavor. I prefer the American version since the apple undertones goes well with pork.

Would this be good for making home made ton katsu?

Yes, it is good for homemade ton katsu. I transfer a little amount to a squeeze bottle and keep both the original (large bottle) and the squeeze bottle in refrigerator.
