I was looking for a reliable sapphire glass automatic that was value for money I had heard good things about the 4R35 caliber as having decent accuracy. I also wanted a magnified date window on a diver styled watch with a good lume. At the end of my search, I came across this King Samurai Manta Ray with the blue silicone strap and brought it on Amazon. This was my first blue dial watch face and I wasn’t sure I would completely like it. When I it arrived, I was a bit skeptical the first two days as I did another round of research on it and looked at all the details with a magnifying glass . Although it wasn’t made in Japan, it was only loosing two seconds a day. Which was amazing! The blue Manta Ray watch face with the Samurai sword hand and lumi bright made it so easy to tell the time day or night. I absolute love this watch! What I noticed is that the watch seems to slow slightly more than two seconds by the end of the day when I take it off. Then, lying it flat at night seems to bring it back slight faster so that it averages about two seconds a day. I love the colour of the strap, but it does tend to come out of the metal holder when I swim or flick my hands after washing my hands. So I’m going to get a blue FKM replacement strap. Overall, I absolutely love this watch and it would be my general purpose watch for decades to come.

It’s amazing watch. This is my first Seiko and I’m truly enjoying it. I have watches which are way more expensive than this, but I can confirm this watch punches above it’s weight class in terms of price, fit and finish. I have had friends who doesn’t know a lot about watches to seasoned collectors. Everyone has appreciated this watch. It’s just such a good watch. One minor criticism is that dial is a little dark, so sometimes it is hard to see the Mantas. With that being said, the dial is absolutely stunning along with rest of the watch.

I was looking at sub-$1000 divers for a couple of months. Ended up going down the Seiko rabbit-hole and discovered the King Samurai. The list of features at this price shocked me: Sapphire Crystal, Ceramic Bezel, Bright (if somewhat short-lasting) Lume, 200m, White Dial. Nothing in this price range (aside from Baltic) came close. Plus there's something cool about this chunky, old-school Seiko aesthetic. It's not trying to be a Rolex Sub or a Tudor or Omega. It's very workmanlike in its design -- ESPECIALLY if you pair it with a Crafter Blue dive strap. For an extra $65 or so you can take this good watch and make it look great. I've had this beast for less than a week and have already dinged it slightly -- however this is one of those watches that looks better with some character. I smiled when I saw the little dent. Added Bonus: my watch arrived with a "Made in Japan" dial and a perfectly aligned bezel. Three cons so far: 1. Seiko 4R movement runs around 10 seconds fast per day and only has around 40 hour reserve (at this price that's reasonable) 2. Screw down crown can be a bit gritty at times 3. Gripping the bezel isn't easy with the stock strap and very tough with the Crafter Blue upgrade. Overall I'm thrilled with this stylish yet blue-collar diving beast. Guess we were made for each other :) UPDATE: As much as I LOVED that Crafter Blue strap from an aesthetic perspective -- the rubber irritated my skin so much that I went back to the original Seiko strap. I'm so glad I did. The experience reminded me of just how comfortable these Seiko rubber dive straps are. No irritation whatsoever and the band expands nicely during times that my wrist swells. So yeah, this watch is even better value because you can't go wrong with the included strap.

Beautiful watch. Sapphire glass, ceramic insert bezel, screw down crown and reliable automatic 4R35 movement. This beauty is fully Japan made which is an added value over pieces assembled in other countries. Bezel’s pip aligns perfectly at 12 o’clock. Cyclops, waffle dial, golden tip on seconds hand and exposed inner ring on bezel are nice details along with the different textures in the crown. I love this watch.
