Without instructions included how does one locate correct positions to fasten these to the lid and box? I don't want to drill a bunch of wrong holes.

I extended the wing lock nut to the end of the slot. Then positioned it on the vertical where it would be screwed in. Opening the door to a 90 degree angle position the other side to see where it would mount horizontally to keep the door at angle. This will get you in approximate the position to start securing it
