Yes, the edition from Calliope has the 2 piece box instead of the pegboard tuck-box.

Can this game be played if one of the people don't speak English?

I believe so. There is no text on the cards and the game is all about taking tricks with the lowest card in your hand of 12 cards. The catch is you are also collecting cards throughout the game of higher values. I think as long as someone can explain the rules, speaking English will not prohibit game play. It's a really fun game and easy to explain, so I think you'll be fine.

Would the game be playable without the Santa and Mrs Clause cards?

Yes it would be playable, but that's making the game more predictable. Without using the Santa cards, whoever is dealt the "1" card is guaranteed to win the 12th day, since there's no other card that can beat it. With the Santa cards, the player who gets the 1 card has to either gamble on playing it on the last day, or play it on an earlier day. Since the other players know that the 1 card might be played before the 12th day, that'll change the strategy for playing the 2 cards, and so on. So yes it's playable without the Santa cards, but it'll lose some strategy.
