What might this be? As a psychologist, that was the first question I was taught to ask when administering the Rorschach inkblot test. The idea was to get patients to project their innermost thoughts, fears, and desires onto an ambiguous picture. It's been years since I've given a Rorschach, but I am still intrigued by the idea that people interpret art based on their underlying predispositions. For years I've been playing with the juxtaposition of some very basic shapes that allow folks to bring their own ideas to my work. That said, when asked "What might this be?" about my latest series of art, I doubt many would hazard to say, "A bunch of plastic party plates cut up into different designs." To be completely honest, though, this is exactly what they are. I've translated many of the basic shapes I've been playing with for years and used my Silhouette Cameo to cut up plastic party plates. Each layer is cut from a different colored plate and then assembled to create a miniature scene. Measuring approximately 7.25 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 1 inch deep, this piece of projective art can either be hung on a hook or nail or, using the attached magnetic strip, stuck to a metal surface. They're a perfect conversation starter. Or, if you prefer, a glimpse into your friends and family's personality when you ask, "What might this be?"
