5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an over-the-counter dietary supplement. It is a serotonin pre-cursor. The amount of 5-HTP naturally available in the body for healthy individuals depends on the availability of the amino acid tryptophan & the activity of various enzymes, particularly amino acid carboxylase and its inhibitors. Supplementation with 5-HTP increases the availability of the starting compounds to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system believed to affect mood and sleep patterns. Common dosages available over the counter are 100mg to 500mg per day. The amount of 5-HTP in PARTYAID is less than the amount in a typical over the counter dietary supplement. The risk of overloading on serotonin from drinking a PARTYAID is low. However, there may be some risk in taking too much exogenous 5-HTP in healthy individuals, for people that are already taking a products that increase serotonin levels, have a disorder related to the serotonin metabolism pathway or are taking medications for Parkinson’s disease. Serotonin Syndrome is caused when there is too much serotonin built up in the body and may cause tremors, mood problems or more serious side effects if the amount of serotonin is high enough. The primary risk for developing Serotonin Syndrome includes concurrently taking more than one serotonin promoting drugs such as Mono Amine Oxidase Inhibitors, (MAOIs), Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRIs), Tricyclic Antidepressants among others. We therefore include an additional warning on our PARTYAID product: Not recommended for children or women while nursing or pregnant. Consult your medical professional before starting any supplement regimen or prior to use if you have or suspect a medical condition or are taking prescription drugs including drugs for depression, migraines, Parkinson's disease or psychiatric disorders. Do not use with other supplements containing L-Tryptophan or 5-HTP.
