Can the unit be installed in an attic space, or must it be outside?

Which unit? The compressor can be installed anywhere that it meets installation specs. There are references in the book regarding istallation in closed spaces, which suggests indoor installation is acceptable. However, indoor installations are not directly discussed. I installed my compressor in an enclosed cubby space. I ducted the exhaust directly through the outside wall. The intake comes from the outside also, but is separated from the exhaust such that the compressor is not recycling its own exhasut.

So the built in water pump is to evacuate the condensate? Is there a drain line included or just use 1/2” pex or vinyl tubing?

No drain line included - I did 1-1/4 inch clear soft line

Can the Nest thermostat be used with this?

No. Mini splits use a very different type of thermostat. You may be able to find some universal mini split wifi connected thermostats if that's what your after but the nest is not one of them. You can check what systems work with nest on their website.
