Has anyone owned this longer than a year ? What is the durability of the bag and zippers like? Is it well made?

I've had this bag for about 4/5 years now. Still in great shape. Note: I use it for carrying laptop cables and other travel accessories. I don't use these bags for toiletry items. I would never too. You should use ziplok bags for toiletry items and dispose of them after every trip. It is more hygienic than using the same case over and over.

How waterproof is this bag? If I have a bottle of shampoo explode during transportation, will it get all over my items outside of the bag?

The bag is definitely not waterproof. I put the whole bag in a ziplock bag to avoid a suitcase disaster.

Can it fit in a backpack?

Yes this would fit in a backpack however, if I were backpacking, I would want the kind of case that unfolds with a hanger on one end for hands-free access.
