Great Book (poor shipping)
There is a wealth of information in this book and it is excellently well-illustrated. Almost all technical terms are carefully explained. I wish there had been a 'Suggested Books' to read at the end. However, be warned. Amazon continues to send books in PLASTIC envelopes. These envelopes Do Not protect the book. This particular book is an over-sized ,heavy paperback. My copy had damage to all four corners from bumping in transit. Yes, they will replace it - in the same kind of envelope with possibility of same result. Why not package the product more carefully to begin with? Boxes are easily recycled, plastic envelopes not so much.

A amazing wonderful timely work, every level of interest in Oceanography, and Ocean Conservation
This book is 500 pages of amazing, and important knowledge and information on our Oceans, Marine Life, Habitat, Environment and conservation. It does not matter what your level interest is as a lay person, student, or professional. Ashlan Cousteau has provided for every one. The book is easy to read and understand, well illustrated, with beautiful color photographs, color illustrations, well laid out and understandable data tables. Each topic and sections are written so it maintains your interest, and holds your attention, so you are not trying to absorb to much information at one time. Icons are used through out the book to emphasize important information, point out a fun fact. Ashlan included history, Oceanography, Marine Biology, Ocean Exploration, Conservation, the Environment, Human interaction, Marine Wild life those that live in the Oceans, and Inhabit the shorelines, She provided a wealth of where to obtain additional information and resources. If you are a recreational diver, or just like to swim and snorkel, this book will help keep you safe, from marine life that can harm you, if you are not aware of what they are or the danger they present.. Ashlan was supported in writing Oceans For Dummies by her husband Phillipe Cousteau, and free lance writer Joe Kraynak. This foe me is the college course I never was able to take, I grew up like many watching The Ocean World of Jacque Cousteau, I truly believe Captain Cousteau would be proud, as well as Phillippe father's als named Phillippe who passed when in a aircraft accident on expedition. Thank you Ashlan.

Great book but had some damage blaming Amazon
Love the book but was sad that it seemed to have some scratches and frayed corners ... and since it’s not used and just came out I was not happy about that. But the knowledge is awesome

Comprehensive Dummies guide to our oceans
A completely comprehensive resource on everything and anything to do with the oceans. It's been a while since I've picked up a book in the 'for Dummies' series and it's great to see that they are just as digestible and full of understandable and enjoyable material. Aesthetically everything is well-formatted, the layout is perfect and now there are full-colour illustrations plenty. There is so much information contained within I'm at a loss to give even a brief overview. Check out the look inside button as I think you get a peek at the contents. For anyone with even the smallest interest in the oceans or for children who can use it as a workbook for school, it's a terrific resource and well worth the price.

Fantastic for kids to learn all about the oceans & its sea life as well as the climate!
My sons taken a great interest in this book and I think what's appealing is the fact that this book contains a lot of colour photographs making it more engaging for children. With regards to the age level, my son is ten years old, so I think any younger might be a push to read. The book has been written so that the many topics regarding the ocean is easy to find, such as sea life, the history of the oceans, ecosystem, microbes, vegetation, mollusks, exploration, myths, there is more to this list and my son can jump to these subjects very quickly as not everything contained in this book is of interest to him. He's enjoyed learning about the ocean physics which incorporates the weather and climate, I believe he may have been doing this subject at school or is currently studying it, well at least he'll get a head start with this book if he hasn't started studying it yet. I've rather enjoyed the section on underwater exploration myself. Each chapter has a introduction placed in a yellow square which tells you what's in the chapter, so you can decide to read on or skip to the next chapter. The book also has included quite a few website links which is really useful if you wish to find out more on a particular chapter covered in the book. These links are actually in each chapter and not just placed right at the back, a very good feature.Icons are placed next to certain paragraphs indicating a 'fun fact', 'remember' or 'warning', drawing your attention to these sections, suppose they're a good idea if you want some quick fun facts about the ocean then you can just browse through it looking for the yellow icons!I will be honest, this is the best by far 'Learning Made Easy For Dummies' book I have in my collection, I have quite a few. It really is engaging, colourful, nicely laid out and encourages the younger generation to read more. Most of their books are just all text with B/W illustrations, maybe the odd colour photo but that's it.I'm very happy to recommend this book, worth buying!

Interesting overview
This is a very interesting general book on all aspect of the ocean, from the residents to the geology. It provides a very comprehensive overview and goes into just enough scientific detail to make it really interesting, but without becoming too science-y for the lay person to enjoy. It is, instead, very approachable and makes for a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in our oceans.

A great book for any household.
"Oceans for Dummies" is a fine addition to this series of books. With the various high-profile documentaries that have appeared on television in recent years (Blue Planet, etc.) there has been significantly greater interest and awareness of the vast watery parts of our planet. This book is well laid out and written in a way that makes everything easy to comprehend. There are plenty of helpful photographs and diagrams to help illustrates the various topics too.In addition to the general "Table of Contents" at the start of the book, there is also a more detailed alphabetical index at the back, which makes it very easy to locate any specific references that you may be looking for. This really is the kind of book that will appeal to all sorts of people, for all sorts of reasons. The clear, engaging layout and language also means that it equally useful and appealing to children, adolescents and adults alike. This makes a great "coffee table book" that visitors can happily pick up and browse through (when we get back to the days when we can have visitors in the house, obviously!). From a practical viewpoint, even though it is a paperback, it is a quality, robust paperback with the type of heavily glossed cover that allows it to be wiped clean.Although this is also available in a Kindle edition I think this is one of those books that works far better in a tangible printed version.I hope you find these insights helpful.

Packed with information and interesting facts
This is my first 'for dummies' book, I wasn't sure what to expect from it , I was kind of expecting a lot of pictures and hardly any information , I don't know why , maybe it's because it says it's for dummies.Anyway , how wrong was i , it's absolutely bursting with information and not so many pictures as i thought , but that isn't a bad thing, there is a wealth of information in this book from ecosystems, weather , climate change, different species from mammals, fish and even reptiles that inhabit the worlds seas and Oceans. This book covers everything about different habitats, endangered species, conservation, I especially enjoyed reading through the ten deadly ocean creatures chapter.Really young children might need a bit of help looking through this book , but anyone above the age of 7 would find this a really good read , packed with a lot of interesting information and facts on the world's oceans. It's the kind of book you will pick up again and again and has definitely got my interested in the rest of the for dummies books.
