Update Sept 2014 - The worst thing possible happened. One of the hard drives failed! I got excellent support from Synology, and once diagnosed the fix was as easy as replacing the defective disk and letting the Disk Station fix itself. Just based on the technical service this product is a notch above my expectations of good service, theirs was GREAT!I am not an IT professional but I am kind of tech savvy. I have had this unit for a little over a year and it preforms very well. Assembly was easy and straight forward. For my initial set up I added 2 3TB drives and used SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid). I set the drives up to format, went to bed and the next morning the drive was ready to use. I am using this in multiple ways. The primary purpose is for music, photo, and video server (using the sinology software). I can access the content from anywhere on my network via PCs, Mac, and several connected Sony devices. I have not tried to set it up to be used over the internet (security risks bother me there). The second purpose is to use the USB ports to hold my external backup drives (USB), which now allows me to remotely back up over the network. I have also created a couple of folders on the main drive to hold some shared files. All works as advertised and I have had no issues. Speed of streaming HD video to TV is good enough that I do not have dropped frames.After adding all my files from multiple locations and a few movie purchases I found that I need more storage space. Following the easy instructions I shut down the Disk Station, added another 3TB drive, started up and followed the add drive instructions. I was on my way out for a long weekend and when I got back the drive was installed and there were no issues. This thing works GREAT! Good speed, reliability, easy to set up & maintain, what more could one ask for?I would recommend it to anybody who wanst an affordable high capacity network storage solution.

Update: Jan 19 2013I decided to return the DiskStation to Amazon and their excellent replacement service had a new one out to me in a week (probably would have got one sooner but they were out of stock). The new DiskStation worked perfectly and I can now agree with all the positive things people said about these devices. I am currently setting up my home router to forward the necessary ports so I can make the most out of it. They try to make it super easy to use and for the most part it works fine. Howver, my router couldn't seem to get auto-setup properly so I had to manually configure it for port forwarding. I'm techy enough to know how to do that but perhaps others may find it scary. It's not! Just follow the guides at Synology.com and all will be good. I'm excited to try out CloudStation and have my own "limitless" Dropbox clone for the family. Happy days!========== Original Review (1 star) ========I was excited to have my first home NAS and I'd heard that Synology was a good place to start. I have just received my DS413j and I'm sorry to say it's failed at the first hurdle. It won't even power up. I followed the setup instructions to the letter, put in a brand new Western Digital NAS hard drive (listed as compatible with the DS413j), pressed the on button and nothing except a brief blue flash from the On light. Turns out I am experiencing a VERY common problem with Synology products: a faulty PSU.Their forum has a long thread going back to late 2010 with customers experiencing this exact issue. To find the thread I'm talking about, go to: forum DOT synology DOT com and search for the thread called "Powerpack issue [merged thread]"Normally I would chalk this up to "just one of those things" and assume my item was Dead on Arrival but to see that Synology have known about this problem with their PSUs for 2 years annoys me somewhat and hence the one star review. To their credit, it appears several customers got sent a working replacement PSU after submitting a support ticket to the company. I have submitted a ticket myself. I hope this process is smooth so I can begin to use the NAS in the next week or two.What is frustrating is I'm now torn between sending everything back to Amazon or hoping Synology's support process is relatively quick and painless.EDIT: Amazon doesn't seem to allow links (probably for the best!) so I had to spell out how to find Synology's forums. Also tidied up the review and added a little more of an explanation as to why I have given the product one star.

I really wanted this NAS to work it has lots of cool apps that can be installed on it. But the unit keeps hanging while transferring lots of files it becomes totally unresponsive. The blue light on the power button just keeps blinking if you try to shut it down, even if you leave it on overnight it will still keep blinking you have to unplug it and restart it for it to work again.

Un acierto completo para usar como servidor particular, nube particular, etc, es 100% configurable y con unos "retoques" tienes toda una nube personal que nada tiene que envidiar a dropbox y similares...Eso, si para los discos mejor ponerle buen material ( WD RED ).

Prodotto fantastico! Fa mille cose con estrema facilità e flessibilità. Ho in particolare apprezzato il supporto per Raid 0, 1, 5 e 10, la possibilità di avere molteplici volumi in BOD mode,e la possibilità di passare da una configurazione Raid ad un'altra senza dover fare backup/restore dei dati (vedere nel manuale le migrazioni supportate). Molto interessante anche l'opzione Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) che crea automaticamente la configurazione Raid ottimale anche con dischi diversi tra loro. Inoltre ha una pletora di estensioni software utili come l'Antivirus base, la Cloud Station, l'iTunes Server, il Video Server e il Plex Media Server. Auttualmento lo sto utilizzando in rete con i miei 3 Mac in configurazione Raid 1 con 2 dischi Western Digital WD40EFRX RED da 4TB l'uno. Il mio piano è di espanderlo a 4 dischi da 4TB in Raid 5 non appena avrò riempito i 4TB attualmente disponibili.

Ich bin 43, PC-Technisch interessiert, aber kein Profi-AdministratorEingebaut habe ich 2 dieser Festplatten:Toshiba DT01ACA200 2000GB interne Festplatte (8,9 cm (3,5 Zoll), 7200rpm,...Der Server ist recht klein ( Schuhkarton ), der Einbau der Platten ist richtig leicht,Strom anschliessen, LAN Kabel dran und los gehts!Für verschiedene Aufgaben ( eigene Homepage, Bilder anzeigen/verwalten, Musik ... )gibt es Module oder Apps, die man einzeln installieren kann und die recht unabhängig von einander funktionieren.Mir gefällt dieses Modulare gut, denn ich kann mich gezielt informieren, wie das Modul XY installiert und konfiguriert wird.Und jedes Modul konnte ich innerhalb 20min. bis einer Stunde zum Laufen bringen.Angefangen jeweils bei einem Wissen über das Modul von Null, bis es lief.Also leichte Inbetriebnahme, leichte Wartbarkeit, leichte Erweiterbarkeit.Summ Summ SummDer Server steht im Gästezimmer und summt vor sich hin. Wenn ich damit arbeite (Upload, Bilder anschauen...) dann hört man die Festplatten etwas, im Ruhezustand ist es so leise, dass es mich überhaupt nicht stört. Auch Gäste haben das Ding nie bemerkt.(vielleicht sollte ich das lieber in der Rezi über die Festplatten schreiben)Ich habe 10'000 Bilder und habe alle in den Photo-Ordner vom NAS kopiert. Das NAS (der NAS?) erstellt dann diese kleinen Vorschaubilder und brauchte dafür in meinem Fall 12 TAGE !(ist aber mMn ok, es kann parallel dazu voll mit dem NAS gearbeitet werden)Als die 12 Tage rum waren habe ich die App FotoUploader für den PC entdeckt. Da werden die Vorschaubilder vom (schnellen) PC berechnet und dann zum NAS gepumpt. Damit hätte die Aktion dann nur 1 Tag gedauer...Ich habe 2 kleinere Festplatten drin. Zusammen 4TB. Nutzen kann ich 2TB, da ich Raid für das Backup eingestellt habe. Sind die mal voll, kaufe ich mir wieder 2 Platten, vielleicht dann gleich 4TB. Die waren mir jetzt noch zu teuer.Ich erkenne keine nennenswerte Wärmeentwicklung.Ich streame Videos absolut ruckelfrei über LAN an meine PS3 ebenso über WLAN ans iPad oder ans Galaxy S3.Man greift mit dem Internet-Explorer (oder Firefox oder oder ) auf die Diskstation zu.Sie bietet ein ansprechendes Betriebssystem, welches sehr aufgeräumt daher kommt.Die Dokumentation (digital, schon auf dem Betriebssystem drauf) ist sehr gut.Zudem kann man sich umfänglich im Internet informieren, da gibt es eine Menge an Artikeln bzw. Foren-Einträgen.Früher nutzte ich den DropBox-Service, heute mache ich alles über meinen NAS.Zum Beispiel um im Urlaub meine Bilder zu sichern.Sorry, ich glaube die Rezi ist etwas unorganisiert ausgefallen.Die 5 Sterne sagen es: Ich bin total zufrieden, ab un an war ich gefordert, nie überfordert.lasst es euch gut gehensalute

QNAP TS-119 からの買い換えとして購入。1ドライブでは手狭になったのでこの機会に拡張性を求めて本機を入手しました。ハードウェアの造りとしては、少々安っぽさも感じられます。ドライブにアクセスするために背面ネジを外し上蓋を取り外した上で、プラのドライブトレイを取り出してネジ止めしなければならないので、フロントからワンタッチでアクセスできる上位機種から比べるとマイナスな印象を拭えません。とはいえ、そこは家庭用と割り切れば、家庭内で設置をするうえで必要なケースファンやHDD動作音が気にならない程度の低騒音モデルなので、前述のマイナス面を十分帳消しにできます。ソフト面では「いま風」の管理画面は QNAP に比べてとっつきは難いけど、必要な機能は揃ってるし、シェルにも降りれて、少し凝ったことも十分可能なポテンシャルを持ってます。なにより QNAP より HDD の管理が素晴らしい。異なる容量のHDDを組み合わせてRAID5に似た構成が組めるのはかなりのアドバンテージです。写真データなどを保管する受け皿としては安心感が違います。この異なる容量のHDDが使用可能な同様製品はまだ少ないので、現時点では家庭用として最良の選択肢だと思います。
