The Hodgeheg Paperback – International Edition, August 22, 2017

My kids adored Dick King Smith's wonderful animal stories when they were younger, so I ordered this for my nephew. I just wish Amazon had more of a selection of Dick King Smith's work. In addition to the "Hodgeheg," they loved "Fat Laurence," which I would also love to order for my nephew, but I can't find a copy of it anywhere.

This is a great read to share with your kids or significant other;-) There is an audio that is avaiable which is also great. Unfortunately, not availble in US.

If you are looking for a short chapter book (8 chapters) with larger text to entice your child to read then this is one we would definitely recommend. Well written and illustrated this is an amusing story of a hedgehog family living in Britain. Max, the only boy out of Ma and Pa's litter of four, is very inquisitive. After hearing his parents talking about yet another accident as a hedgehog crossed the road Max is determined to discover a safe way.On his first adventure out of the garden poor Max gets a nasty bang on the head which affects his speech. (If you have ever read the Mr. Men book Mr. Topsy Turvy you will appreciate and enjoy Max's muddled speech.) Now when Max speaks it all comes out topsy turvy and wrong hence the name hodgeheg as that is what he says he is! Never one to give up, once recovered he continues on his quest. The second knock (near death miss) straightens him out. Will he be successful in his quest?LOVELY ending! If reading aloud, it is possible to do in one sitting. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed it. Cute story about a hedgehog and family. My 8 year old loves hedgehogs and enjoys this book. He has read it many times.
