Well written ,might have to get book 2
Imagine an asteroid is shooting towards the earth and we have plenty of time to prepare for it.The best people are put into safe storage with all they'll need to emerge into the aftermath once its safe to do so.What could go wrong? This is a well written sci fi type story with relatable characters.I love the twist.Might just have to buy book 2 .Would make a good film.

Almost excellent
The world is about to be destroyed by a giant asteroid (same old, same old.) A multibillionairre builds underground bunkers and a space 'Ark' in which people and animals are kept in 'suspended animation' until it's safe to repopulate the earth ... something over 120 years hence. The book is in two halves: first the preparation to go into the bunkers/ark, and the second after the survivors return to earth. For some reason they're kept asleep fo 9000 years rather than a hundred so when the space lot return to earth they find the survicors after 800 years of growing the new civilisation. The plot is not very original but the story is quite well written and engrossing. I just found the following faults:1. If you were going to try to repopulate the world, you'd need more than a couple of hundred people to be on the safe side and you definitely WOULDN'T waste any of those spaces on old people! (Loads of young women and sperm samples would be best.)2. The computer network (Annie) that controls it all. Ford goes into huge detail on how the programmer (Anderson) has gne to great lengths to make Annie NOT artificial intelligence ... only to find out that it developed sentience all on its own. Why bother? There was no point and it would never happen. Why not just make it AI in the first place and cut out about four useless chapters?3. In one, totally out of context chapter (5), he mentions that one of the scientists is doing secret research on intelligent insects ... what will possibly go wrong?4.After 800 years, the two groups meet and talk like neighbours because the language hadn't changed a bit. I wonder how a modern person would get on talking to somebody from the 13th Century!5. This book is the first in a series (looks like 2 so far) but there is no warning of this and the story doesn't come to a satisfactory conclusion - bit of a cheat really6. There are so many characters and the reader hasn't really got an idea whose story it is7. It could do with a good proofread. Too many silly little typosThat list seems pretty devastating but actually it's not bad and quite an enjoyable read. I may buy the next book IF it's the last in the series

Fabulous read!
I love the blend of sci-fi and post apocalyptic in this story. As to be expected in a Devon C Ford book the characters are outstanding, with excellent interaction and development. I found the multiple story lines fascinating, enjoying the build up to the asteroid, the time in space and return to Earth. This series is going to be excellent and I can't wait for the next one!

Very good. Page turner
After the disappointment of the formulaic Toy Soldiers, I really enjoyed this. A mixture of science fiction, post apocalyptic survival and dystopian tales, its a great and clever mix that I can't compare to another book. The characters are great and I hope to see them filled out more in subsequent books. Although you are told upfront (in the synopsis on this page) that something goes wrong (of course!) I couldn't see the complex problems coming and as it all slowly reveals, the book is a real page turner.Looking forward to the sequel.

Unexciting
The blurb (admittedly not the author’s fault) should have been a warning: “ Amir Weatherby has the world in his hands, quite literally. [sic]”The pedestrian style didn’t inspire me to read very far. There’s unrealistic dialogue like “…depending on the gravitational pull of the sun, as it passes through our solar system.” Ten words too many. And why ‘our’ solar system? Nice idea (if unoriginal) but dull result.

A dystopian story.
I don't normally read sci- fi stories , but the title and opening pages drew me in.The first chapters were quite interesting as the world's elite few who knew that life as we know would come to an end , when a meteorite the size of Africa would hit us in ten years.Secret plans were made and carried out. Selected people would be placed in specially designed pods, frozen, and sent into space until the world had discovered from the devastation, approximately one hundred years. After the pods came back to earth, I started to get bored, the story basically turned into three communities fighting territory wars.Good book, but not for me.

Good characters and SCI-fi plot for a world-ending asteroid encounter
I enjoy a good SCI-fi story and this New Earth Book 1 didn’t disappoint. The premise is a the world’s richest tech guru finds out a life-ending asteroid is going to hit the earth roughly a decade in the future. He leads his companies to concentrate on creating two underground sanctuaries and one orbital sanctuary where members of the human race will be in a cryogenic state until such time as the earth can be repopulated. The science, political dynamics and human nature are well portrayed. The asteroids hits, life is destroyed and, to not create any spoilers, the three sanctuaries don’t exactly go as expected. However, the book does end with some humans back on a recovering earth but the last part of this book foreshadows the typical human nature of different groups exhibiting dominance over each other and the earth. I’m not really into this type of book so will probably not pursue the other books in the series. As a good SCI-fi book with a definite ending - with a little justified foreshadowing - I give this book 4 stars. It’s a great apocalyptic thriller with the end coming in the form of a killer asteroid that wipes the face of the earth.

Good concept
This is a new take on post-apocalyptic fiction, one that stands out as rather unique. The story drew me in, and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel. The text would have benefited from an editor to pick up on the grammar, missing words (!) and overall clean up the writing a bit. Still, an engaging read.
