Q: What are the outer dimensions of the face plate? L x w

2.345" wide x 1.67" high. Mounting holes are 1.91" center to center. Mounting hole(2) diameter is 0.165". You will need to cut a 1.125" diameter hole for the device. I use a hole saw chucked up in my cordless drill. I measured all of these dimensions with my dial caliper so they are dead on. You can actually mount the USB charger socket without the mounting plate by utilizing the lockwasher provided with the unit. This will require that you use a hole saw the will accurately cut a 1.125" diameter hole.

Q: Does the LED stay lit even when not in use? Along the same lines, does it consume power even when not in use?

As long as you have power to it, LED stays on. I have 3 in 3 different Jeeps, all work great, fast charging. I do have a toggle switch on all 3 to kill the power when not using the jeep because it is some times weeks or months that I may not use the jeep. How much power it consumes? I would think a lot less than a car alarm LED, should be good for a couple weeks without killing batt.

Q: How wide is the diameter of the circular faceplate? Does it require the round rectangular faceplate to secure it?

It doesn't require the faceplate to secure it. The cylindrical body of the charger itself is threaded and has a plastic but that threads on from the backside to hold it secure. The threads are the whole body of the cylinder so it is able to be mounted on variable thicknesses. I think I used a 1&1/8 hole to secure it but I don't remember exactly that part

Q: Do you wire this directly to 12 volts ?

Yes. It's very simple. It comes with terminal connectors that hook to the back of the unit. All you need to do is crimp them onto some electrical wire and hook directly to your battery or another power source that hooks to the battery.
