It advises against the use of oil. I don't think oil is need in the cutters themselves. I think they are just selling cheap oil to make money. Why use canola oil of all things? **Q: This oil seems to leave gum-like residues. I read that it contains plain canola oil. Would olive oil or soybean oil be a better vegetable oil choice?** A: i'm not sure if the jar you got is defective possibly... Useful for maintaining the efficiency of shredders. This helps lubricate the moving parts. However, it may not remove any residue of gum or glue, which often comes with paper that is being shredded. I'm not sure whether there's a solution for that, or if the shredder should be opened up and cleaned with a suitable material. As far as this product is concerned, it is a lubricant that has been time-tested to perform its intended function.
