Supporting teachers in the quest to help students learn as effectively and efficiently as possible, The Science of Learning translates 99 of the most important and influential studies on the topic of learning into accessible and easily digestible overviews. Building on the bestselling original book, this second edition delves deeper into the world of research into what helps students learn, with 22 new studies covering key issues including cognitive-load theory, well-being and performing well under exam pressure. Demystifying key concepts and translating research into practical advice for the classroom, this unique resource will increase teachersโ understanding of crucial psychological research so they can help students improve how they think, feel and behave in school. From large- to small-scale studies, from the quirky to the iconic, the book breaks down complicated research to provide teachers with the need-to-know facts and implications of each study. Each overview combines graphics and text, asks key questions, describes related research and considers implications for practice. Highly accessible, each overview is attributed to one of seven key categories: Memory: increasing how much students remember Mindset, motivation and resilience: improving persistence, effort and attitude Self-regulation and metacognition: helping students to think clearly and consistently Student behaviours: encouraging positive student habits and processes Teacher attitudes, expectations and behaviours: adopting positive classroom practices Parents: how parentsโ choices and behaviours impact their childrensโ learning Thinking biases: avoiding faulty thinking habits that get in the way of learning A hugely accessible resource, this unique book will support, inspire and inform teaching staff, parents and students, and those involved in leadership and CPD. I love the research!
The research and actual facts provided with references to the studies is awesome. I havenโt read through the entire book just yet, but I have either learned a lot or have been provided actual studies to back up why I do what I do in the classroom. There are of course some things that just donโt really relate to me which is why I went back and forth on taking a star away. I ended up with 4 stars because if anyone is looking at the reviews I want them to really understand that sometimes things may not relate or you might have to dig to find a relationship to your practices. I would still highly recommend this book!

Good introduction to the topic of learning
Gives a short overview of interesting studies regarding learning. Some are more targeted towards younger students where parents' play a role and others are from looking at university students. It is more of an introduction to the topic and a good summary rather than a deep dive.

Easy to digest. Well written. Useful. Must read!
This book is an outstandingly clear and uncomplicated way to gain knowledge from ninety-nine terrific educational journals. In it, I found many useful and thought-provoking journals that were decoded and presented in a way that is understandable even by teachers that are not familiar with academic reading. Every paper is also presented with illustrations that help with the processing of the information included in it, gladly following the suggestions about dual coding that one of the studies proposes. Much like the dual coding example, the authors of the book take any useful content that might affect the design of the book and how it will be consumed and apply it. Thanks to this ethos, the book is a delight to read and definitely a must-read for anyone that cares about the profession. It also has many studies targeted at parents, which made me reflect on what type of parent would I be if I had children. Five stars, no doubt one of the most useful books about education I have read so far!

Oustanding!
I found this book fascinating, particularly given the increasing prominence of cognitive science and its implications for teaching and learning within educational institutions. PGCE and BEd students concentrate on fundamental knowledge regarding student learning, emphasising memory, attention, and cognitive processes to optimise instructional methodologies. This encompasses Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), retrieval practice, and spaced learning strategies to promote effective classroom teaching.

The best book for busy educators to access high level research
I always wanted to get the 1st edition of this book and never quite got round to it. Now I have the 2nd edition, I feel that I missed a trick. The succinct summaries of educational research study finding, related research and classroom implications (plus clear cross referencing to other studies in the book) is so quick to access and take actions from (that have an evidence base). This is the holy grail for teachers who want to check what they are doing is rigorous and valid, or to change their practice to something with more than just an anecdotal background. Every teacher should have access to it.
