You should not leave the water in the water area and should remove the water after use otherwise the area in which the water is stored always forms a green layer and may damage the clothes - I seen it personally in my product before replacement and after that I don't leave water so no issues in that. And another thing is even if you use drinking water, it still forms a white layer around the area from which the steam comes out. In both products I used it is of the same.
