Roll With It: Brass Bands in the Streets of New Orleans (Refiguring American Music)

What a fascinating read!
Really enjoyed this book. Well written, it is a fascinating look at the whole lives of these proud musicians, not sparing details of how hard a life it is trying to make a go in New Orleans. Also, being a tuba player I appreciated the amount of information presented about the New Orlean's Tuba players. A must read for fans of brass bands or anyone who wants a glimpse of the struggles of poverty in New Orleans.

A different perspective
Matt Sakakeeny combines a pure love for the music and culture, with an academically trained perspective to show the joys and the challenges faced by New Orleans' contemporary brass band musicians. A must-read for anyone who loves New Orleans music, or wants a realistic look at the lives of young black men trying to break away from realities of urban life in America.

Roll with it, has it!
A well researched and well written book on an under appreciated piece of American culture, music and history. Thank you Matt Sakakeeny for this thoughtful treatise on New Orleans and it's brass bands.
