No, it is NOT accurate. This is a thermometer, NOT the clock. They must use the same packaging as a clock, because mine came with NO BATTERY COMPARTMENT. Hope this helps.

Can this thermometer be calibrated?

Our outdoor thermometers are calibrated at the factory under temperature controlled environments. They cannot be calibrated once purchased as any area outside is not temperature controlled.

can any of these be hung in direct sunlight?

YHes, I had one in the direct sunlight for 5 years in Florida. The sun did begin to t cloud the clear plastic cover. Also keep in mind the temperature will be much higher in the direct sun. I just bought another one because the previous was that good.
