Q: Is it comfortable enough to sit for a long period of time?

The longest I sat on it was approximately 1hr and it was comfortable. Just don't wear short shorts if you expect to sit in it a long time, in the time I was there, the back of my thighs stuck to it and it felt like it peel off my skin..ouch!

Q: would it be sturdy enough for someone who weighs around 270

I weigh 230 and its been very sturdy. I have also had someone weighing 170 sit in my lap while using it with no problem
