On the Bagel setting, does it toast only on one side? Some toasters advertise this feature.

No, it doesn't toast on one side only when using the bagel setting. Both sides are toasted but in "bagel" setting, one side toasts lighter. But I found this to be the case whether or not "bagel" setting is used. One side toasts lighter even without using the bagel setting. Had I known that this toaster doesn't have a true bagel setting (i.e., toasts on one side only), I probably would not have purchased this toaster. But I kept it and it's really a nice toaster. To keep one side of my bagel fairly "toast-free", I just turn the darkness dial down to 1 or 2 level and it works fine.

how long is the slot? how deep?

It is 6 inches long .. 6 inches deep and 1 1/2 inches wide. Sandwich slices have no problem fitting in. My only concern is it does not toast evenly.

When toasting larger quanitys of bread (like for a family breakfast) are the results consistent first slice to last. Thanks for your help........Paul

I have only toasted 2 consecutive full toasters of bread not 4 or 5, but for 2 the results are comparable. In other words, the second batch is consistent with the first in toasting level.

Does the inside cage that holds the bread moves sideways to open up and close as the bread is inserted? (Not sure how to describe this but some do.)

Bread is top loaded. When the lever is pushed down the inside "cage" closes around the items. This allows for thicker items or thinner items. I love this toaster.
