The edges on all knives needed a lot of work after years of using pull-thru sharpeners, but after a few minutes with the stone I was already seeing a difference. The little guide is practically useless, but the stone sharpens well. I'm a total novice, and have brought a good number of my kitchen knives up to "shave your arm hair" sharp.
