Q: What is the difference between formula 2 and 3

Formula 2 is for weak, peeling nails, formula 3 is for hard, dry, brittle nails that break. Over the past 10 years, I've used each of them, depending on the issue at the time & they both work. I've tried cheaper brands, but keep coming back to Nailtiques, because it won't yellow your nails (or the polish you apply it over), the cheaper brands I've used have yellowed.

Q: How long do I have to use the formula 2 for my nails to be strong?

I actually used formula No.3 but agree with the other comments. There must be something or lack of something in our diet or daily routine that causes our nails to be soft or brittle. Until we determine what that is and fix it, using the Nailtiques is a great alternate solution. Yes that little bottle can be expensive but for those problem nails, it really is worth it.

Q: how do you tell if your nails are soft of hard?

If they're soft, they bend easily & tend to peel off in layers. It's also usually difficult to grow soft nails long. If your nails are hard, they don't bend & are dry, often hard nails will grow long, with proper care (soaking in oil, etc.). Rather than peel, hard nails will break off. For example; my nails are hard & dry. The other day when making my bed, my hand slipped as I was pulling the sheet up & my thumb nail smashed against the headboard, which made it snap off, almost down to the fingertip. I hope this helps you decide which formula you need.
