are these sturdy enough to do embroidery on??

Firstly, it is a fine canvas stuck onto 3mm cardboard with gesso to prepare for paint. Not really suitable for embroidery.

What kind of frame would people usually put these in?

I use 8 x 8 boards and frame them in squarebox picture frames. They are versatile and can be used for photos with the glass or painting without glass .
