Does what it needs to do, every time
I purchased the 8 inch model after a cheap Chinese made digital caliper I owned no longer gave me accurate readings. I should have purchased this caliper instead. The vernier scale is easy to read and gives me the accuracy I need for just about all of my tasks. My old calipers were 6 inch and I found that there were times when having an extra 2 inches of capacity would have been helpful. The 8 inch capacity with both inch and metric vernier scales is the best model for my needs. The calipers slide smoothly and are easy to lock in place with the thumb screw. The vinyl storage case is very thin and fragile looking...I don't expect it to last long.

The secret ingredient is love.
I'm a dork, and I appreciate mechanical precision, so you may not care as much about what is essentially a $60 ruler as I do. That said, when you hold this in your hands, you immediately realize that someone put a lot of thought and care into this design. It is rock solid. There is no rattle, there is no shake, there is no give. Do I really need to know how many 20ths of a millimeter thick something is? Very, very, very rarely. Does it make me happy to know that this thing exists that can give me consistent, precise readings without requiring a battery? Absolutely. My only complaint is that the model I bought doesn't have a thumb wheel for fine adjustments, but that was my fault for not choosing one that had that feature.Yes, the Chinese digital calipers you can buy for half this price are smooth and easy to use. Now take the battery out of it and use it to try to measure something. What's that you say? It's hard to read? You wish you had something analog that you could read quickly and easily without having to deal with batteries? You've come to the right place.TL;DR: If you're reading this review you're probably shopping for a vernier caliper. If you care enough about accurate measurements to buy a vernier caliper, you should buy this one.

Genuine Mitutoyo at a reasonable price. -t
Will use in my home shop. Easy to use IF YOU UNDERSTAND VERNIER SCALES and how to use them. No batteries is a big plus for me. Have owned/used many of the digital models at work—the batteries usually leak and ruin them—sooner or later.

I have owned this verneir caliber for almost a year a half. The the instrument is fairly accurate
I have owned this verneir caliber for almost a year a half. The the instrument is fairly accurate. I have to add the caliber is fairly easy to read and it is reliable in the workplace. After use and washing oil and grease with water and soap, the caliber started to rust, which is strange for a Mitutoyo product, even for a caliber with this price, as cheaper ones did not have this problem. "HOWEVER", unlike the other Mitutoyo products, this did not come with the certficate of inspection, which is again strange for a Vernier with this price tag, and more importantly from "Mitutoyo". I have dealt with cheaper calibers with electronic sensors even, which are almost as accurate from smaller companies, and they came with foam padded plastic cases that protect them when not in use. This vernier came with a useless nylon sleeve, that provides no protection, which makes it difficult to put this isntrument in a tool box when moving. More importantly, unlike the other Mitutoyo products, and some cheaper calibers I experienced, this product has a little bit of resistance to slide. This is not a major issue in use, but it certainly does not provide the best use experience, as I had from other Mitutoyo products. For short, if you are just interested in an analogue vernier caliber that is fairly accurate, this one is fine, although the price tag is little bit high for the issues mentioned. That's if you do not care about the certificate of inspection, the absence of a protective case and the toughness to move slider. Although smaller names may provide smoother calibers with a case that are almost as accurate, there is always the chance of getting a product that is not as good or as reliable from smaller brands. You have the choice.
