it refers to the size of the length of the needle---1/5 means the needle is 27.3 mm long

Are these needles good for hand quilting?

I don't believe these would be good for hand quilting. The eye of the needle is larger to accommodate several strands of thread or yarn. The needle shaft is wider than most needles to allow it to go through thicker woven materials. I think you would want to use a needle with a thinner shaft and narrower eye to prevent making too larger of a hole in the fabric. I think your best bet would be to purchase hand quilting needles.

Are these appropriate for cross stitching? I work on baby quilts and pillowcases and can't find needles here in Hawaii.

yes these are good for that another brand of embroidery needles that I've found work really well for me is the brand clover.

are the eyes large ?. am 65 year old and its difficult for me to thread a needle.
