Q: can't figure out where to plug in the hose

There is no hose used with this set. Place the pump over the valve in the bag and use the handle to pump out the air. The valve will auto-seal when you are finished. (You will get the best seal with the pump if you place the bag on a firm surface, such as a counter top, and push the food into another area of the bag, so that you are pressing the pump against a solid, flat surface.)If you have a food sealer that uses a hose to remove air from a container, it will not work with these bags unless the hose fits OVER the valve hole. If you are trying to fit a hose from another sealer into this vacuum pump, you are wasting your time as there is no place to attach it.By the way, in my experience, these bags do not stay vacuum sealed for more than a few days. I find it much better to use the vacuum pump from this set with the Food Saver mason jar sealers (available from Amazon)to seal canning jars/lids. These stay sealed (so far!) indefinitely.

Q: Does this pump work on the larger bags as well?

The pump is only for sous vide vacuum bags from Ziploc. It's a tiny orifice - it would NOT work on space bags or anything designed to be attached to a vacuum cleaner hose.

Q: Does sucking out the air prevent freezer burn?

It will prevent freezer burn for a while. However, some air will eventually leak in and then freezer burn. You might want to consult Ziploc for a more precise answer.
