The Art of Slow Travel: See the World and Savor the Journey On a Budget [An Unusual Travel Guide]

Entertaining and comprehensive guide to slow travel
This book was an eye-opener for me. I've traveled a lot, especially in Europe, but it was generally the 'see as much as you can in a short space of time' type of travel that most of us do. Apart from London, where I lived for a while. I read this book to understand how the experience of 'slow travel' would differ, and how to do it. Bhavana Gesota's book is a fantastic all-in-one guide to how to achieve this. It's impossible to describe everything covered by the book. It's truly comprehensive. It starts out by breaking down the myths of how this lifestyle could be beyond you -- in the work-anywhere world we now live in, you could pack up your stuff and head off somewhere exotic while working. Or, as the author sometimes does, budget for some time off work to immerse yourself in a culture elsewhere. Think this will harm your career? That's one of the myths busted in this volume. Think you're too old, too young or not rich enough? Think again. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of the journey, making the volume a useful resource covering everything from planning where to go, how and when to book flights and accommodation, what to pack, a method to decide your must-take items, how to get information when you arrive, how to save money... everything. Need to know whether to pay with your card in local currency or your own currency? It's explained. Need a detailed packing list to check against? It's included. Want to look up a few websites to find out the latest information you need? A list of resources is included at the end of each chapter. There's a nice balance of information and personal anecdotes throughout. The anecdotes are both entertaining and enlightening -- you can learn from the author's experiences and mistakes, and in part, experience a little of her journeys with her. Looking for an apartment in Milan, for instance.Overall, a really enjoyable and informative read.

The Best Travel Companion To Have
Usually, for me, travel guides tend to be checklists, things to do or not to do when traveling. Slow Travel became so much more right from the start. Bhavana Gesota invited us into her world, to travel with her, to meet her friends, to become her friend. Then she took us on a multi-year, multi-country, multi-cultural journey to explore our world together, not just quickly, zipping in and out of a tourist destination before zooming back to work and the daily grind of our lives. She invited us to slow down, go off the beaten path, and take the time to not only know each place we visit: the local people, the local culture, but to take the time to get to know ourselves. Why do we want to travel? Why do we want to travel to specific places around the world?Better yet, by reading The Art of Slow Travel, I feel that all of Bhavana's knowledge has been transferred into our minds, so that we can be assured of doing travel, especially slow travel, right. She goes through and identifies all the potential risks and problems that would arise with our slow travel plans, and then provides all the things you need to do to resolve those issues before you even set off. And I mean everything.Bhavana is a perfect traveling companion, and I feel her book would be the next best thing to having her travel with us, showing us how to enjoy our world, and ourselves, and leaving places better for our having been there.

Inspiring and Full of Practical Tips
Have you thought about traveling long term or find the idea intriguing but aren’t sure if it is right for you? This book can help. I loved the way the author combines stories from her travels with practical tips and advice. It’s a fantastic resource to take you through everything you need to know about preparing for and actually living abroad. The packing list at the end is invaluable. I had a short unintentional slow travel trip and it was transformational. The concept of slow travel was new to me but now I know why my trip was so special and how I can recreate the experience. A great read.
