Can this be used for praying mantises ?

Yes - it works great with Praying Mantises.

Why can’t this hold ants or spiders?

This habitat is better designed for larger critters such as frogs, grasshoppers, etc. There is a mesh netting that would allow for smaller spiders and ants to escape. If you are interested in a closed critter cage, I would suggest our Nature Bound Critter Barn that includes an LED night light or you could go with our Nature Bound Ultimate Critter Box.

Can it hold butterflies

Yes, it can. However, once they grow large you can move them to a larger habitat. We also offer the Nature Bound Butterfly Village for growing live butterflies.
