We have 2 standard poodles and after moving into a new home, decided we wanted to keep them downstairs so the first gate went at the top of the stairs. We have a nice landing so we felt it was safe. There are a number of ways to attach, including screws if you want to make it more permanent and I believe they are suggested on a stairway. We opted to not do that and just used the screw in pieces that are pressure mounted to the wall and have not had any problems with them loosening. The gate is set up with a main unit (the gate), and 3 add on pieces to fit into almost any size doorway/stairway. The extensions fit together with a metal rod placed at top and bottom, inserted into both the main piece and the extension, making it very secure. It is pretty self explanatory but the directions are easy to read and understand. If you measure your opening, it will tell you what size extensions you will need. There is a piece that keeps it from opening both ways (written on it "if this is placed at the top of the steps, this must face down" thereby not opening the gate down the steps and reducing the chance of tripping/falling). So the gate does not swing either direction, this may be an issue for some but we are used to it. I love that this gate is self closing so if my hands are full I'm not coming back to close it. It has a great strong lock when you close it and the button on top that you use to push in order to open is super soft, so you push with your thumb and lift just a little. When you open it you will see what I'm talking about, well don't worry and certainly do not try to pull them together, when you assemble it against the wall and begin to tight up your bolts to fit your desired area it will all come together and even on its own***** The assembly was super easy, and the best part is that it has multiple panels to add or removed inches to get the best fit, and you can save the rest in case you move or need to have a different area gate. Once positioned, you can start tightening the bolts evenly with the little tool provided for you (so no holes on your wall!!) and voila it is set. I love how great it looks, not cheap or flimsy. The color is great because it can match many different color schemes. I gave it all 5 stars because, it's easy to assemble, looks super nice, is much more sturdy than the white gate we use to have ( we had to put books on the side to make it tight and even then my puppy would always knock it down lol) and the door is just perfect, swing shut after you walk though reassuring you that your little love one, fur or no fur will be safe on the side you want them to be on. My banister is only 35" tall.** A: The upper mounting points are 34" tall. You have one inch to spare. The arch on the gate is 36" tall. **Q: How large are the wide openings at the bottom of the gate? I have cats and don't want them to slip through.** A: My 9 month old, 6.5 lb kitten can walk straight through the hinge section of the gate. My 10.5 lb middle cat managed to wiggle her head through before I grabbed her (I have no doubt she could have gotten the rest of her through). I wrapped a piece of fabric around this section which has done the trick. My kitten jumps to the top, balances and then jumps down. My older two cats who have been fighting, have not attempted to jump over to get at each other to fight, which was the purpose of the gate. When I want a little extra security, I hang a piece of fabric up another foot and a half from a couple command hooks. I HIGHLY recommend this gate! The material is high quality and it's very sturdy. It's heavy since it's made out of metal and comes in different colors, I chose white because it looks better inside the house and is very modern. It's easy to install and does come with an instruction sheet to follow. The gate is easy to open and close, and if you open the door wide enough it locks in place until you unlock it by pulling on the door and it will automatically close on its own or you can close the door too. The size is perfect for my dog but make sure you do measurements of where you want it in your house before buying to make sure it's a good fit. The measurements of the gate (width and height) on Amazon are accurate. I did measurements based on that and it fit perfectly. I originally saw my neighbor had this gate inside her house for the dog and loved it so I got it myself. I love it! Looks nice, good quality, I just wish I would have gotten it sooner.
