A CNN Special.
My friend saw this book recommended on CNN. She had difficulty locating the book and I managed to track it down for her. She is delighted with it and thinks it very well written and very insightful. Knowing her as I do, this is high praise indeed.

Very informative and current
Very informative, comprehensive and educational. Haas obviously has a good solid understanding of world politics and his writing style is fluid and easily comprehensible. "After the paperback edition" section alone is worth the read.

Missed Opportunity
I agree with some of the earlier reviews that make the case that the first half of the book was quite strong, albeit with a few matters that can be argued, and the second half of the book suffers and drags a bit.One of my issues was when the author is giving credit for the end of the cold war it seemed as if he neglected Reagan to a large extent. I agree with the praise for Gorbachev, but what Reagan did with our military along with his willingness to negotiate was immense.I also have an issue with the author's strong discussion regarding climate change and some of the remedies for it going forward. The author castigates Trump (admittedly an easy target), newly elected at the writing of the book, for what he assumes would be a ruinous foreign policy and yet many of the things that Trump did actually support many of the author's platforms. For example, the author talks about stability and how a united America gives us strength and stability and yet when it comes to the climate "treaty" there is no worrying about the fact that Obama (and now Biden as well) never brings the treaty to Congress. The same goes for the ruinous Iran nuke agreement. If the Iran deal is so great why no congressional involvement. The author worries about what N. Korea will do, especially under a feckless Donald Trump and yet in hindsight we now know that NK was subdued during the 4 years of Trump. The author worries about the defense of Europe under a feckless and "go it alone" Trump and yet one of his prescriptions for a safer Europe is greater defense spending by the EU nations, something that was being done at the urging of Trump...to the mocking jeers of the elitist Europeans. As was what happened with Trump warning Europe about reliance on Russian energy.I am not a 100% defender of Donald Trump, but when we now see the Russians in Ukraine and the CCP buzzing Taiwan menacingly we have to admit that, as the author prescribes for the future, a strong America made the world safer during that 4 year period. The book is a worthy purchase, I am glad that I bought it and I am glad that I read it, I am just perplexed by the misalignment between some of the author's ideas on how to make America and the world safer and more ordered and some of the facts on the ground today under an administration that seems like one that the author would support as being "stable".
