Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging

Not Just Another Book on D&I....
I struggle with the recent appearance of Belonging as part of the family of words that also include Equality, Diversity, Inclusion. For too many men still seem to talk about women as though they belong to them and black people once belonged to whites during the era of the slave trade. So I guess I picked up this book "Diversity Inclusion and Belonging - A Leadership Guide About Why Everyone Matters and How to Make Everyone Feel Like They Do" with curiosity as well as a twist of trepidation if truth be told. This book is different to many others I've read in the D&I space but the author is clearly confident in her own journey and her own way of doing things. Material you'd expect in the front of the book is at the back (Demystifying Diversity) where there also appears a summary of each chapter. There's no referencing of sources either in endnotes or footnotes. In short, the book shouldn't really work but it does and in a powerful way. It's packed full of practical tips and suggestions, there's a remarkable number of anecdotes and stories from the equally remarkable network in which the author moves. The number of surveys cited are extensive and frankly I didn't care that they weren't referenced. I find footnotes and endnotes distracting and they add little when there's enough given in the body of the text to trace the source of the citated work on the Internet if you want to.What is remarkable about this book is the sheer breadth of its scope. The author clearly didn't lack the courage to take on a multitude of topics relevant to the workplace and give them all thorough treatment providing plenty of insightful thinking on each at the same time..Topics covered include employee motivation and engagement, leadership style, emotional intelligence and maturity and wellbeing.I still struggle with the word Belonging so I guess she hasn't convinced me on everything she's touched. But she has convinced this is one of the best D&I books on the market right now.
