don’t lose your time purchase it
After 15 videos reviewed, I purchased and test at my church… it was the worst experience with this kind of mic, noise was stupid loud, and captions was really bad… return it after purchased.

The best on the market
I am a Realtor in Denver and this is the best microphone I have ever used. It is right up there with some of the studio microphones. I use it for social media and when I am on talking with others live. It is the best microphone.

Will not do the job of a real flown shotgun...
To be clear, this is *not* a review intended to drag this product: this is about use-case.As a content creator whose niche is the voiceover industry, sound is pretty important to my brand. My normal rig is in my treated studio, and I've been wanting to get an on-camera shoe-mounted shotgun for my to-camera work, and be able to reduce some of the desk-mess of things. Who better to trust than Sennheiser?Well, truth is, for as good as Sennheiser is (who doesn't love a 416?!) this mic is really designed for one specific use: vloging. At arm's length, this doesn't sound bad at all. But for an in-studio A-cam mic, where I'm 30"-32" off the mic capsule? The fall-off is *severe,* to say the least. Again, the mic works as promised: I was trying to use it in a way it really wasn't intended. Hold it at arm's length, you'll likely be fine. But my Synco D2 flown over me and 12" off my face beats this, and where I'll have to stay. Not Sennheiser's fault, but YouTube talking heads beware: this isn't the droid you're looking for...

Good sound, unobtrusive, and user-friendly.
I usually use off-camera mic for my videos, mostly with the Zoom H1N tucked someplace or with a lav mic piped into it or the camera, but I figured it was time to look for an on-camera shotgun. After watching too many mic comparison videos on YouTube, I was going to get a Rode VideoMic NTG, but then I stumbled across this one - Sennheiser's MKE 400: The circuitry and microphone suspension have been ingeniously refactored to allow for the same length of interference tube and microphone isolation as the Rode, but in a more pocketable form factor with similar sound quality. I really appreciate the automatic power management that handles turning it on and off with the camera without consuming any power in standby. The settings seem pretty much idiot-proof, and the whole package seems pretty well-built, unobtrusive and low-profile. I'm looking forward to testing it some more tomorrow, but so far, it seems to pick up a lot less camera and operator noise than the onboard microphones. Wish it had Rode's safety track feature, but otherwise, great little device.

Sennheiser quality at entry level shotgun microphone pricing.
Works perfectly for handheld videography. Things like interviews and YouTube videos come out crystal clear. The power detection is super handy so you never forget to power on the mic, although, my only minor complaint is that every once in a Blue moon, it doesn't seem to trigger on, so you kinda have to always double check it anyway.

The Ro
I've used Rode mics in various form factors for almost 20 years. This is now my new favorite mic. The sound quality is just superior to my ears in almost every way. The directional sound envelope is a welcome change and the "mini blimp" design is just so much better in the way it works and looks. The sound jack on the front is a great idea as it keeps cables out of your way and the power button is an easily seen green LED that turns on with a quick press and off by holding it half a second. The attention to detail on this product is appreciated. The one thing I wish it did have is a secondary safety channel like the Rode mic has. It's saved me more than once with low/loud speakers at events.Note to GH6 users. There are 3 different settings for your mic in settings, you want to choose the option to POWER the mic from the camera and the auto on/off will work.

JUST GET IT
This mic is phenomenal! There's a reason big youtubers like Peter McKinnon use it. It works great outdoors and the built in wind screen actually does a great job at getting rid of wind noise. The sound is crisp especially if you are in a vlogging situation or the person talking is fairly close to the camera and it does a great job at blocking out other noise. It is sturdy and stable and feels very durable.

My go to all-rounder mic on the move...
I'm a mobile filmmaker.I shoot and edit on my mobile phone – I use an iPhone XR and iPhone 12ProMax.I have a Sennheiser MKE200 which is a great mic – not fuss, plug and play and I've never had a problem with it.Great sound too... however, with the pandemic pushing me a little further away from my subject I was really pleased to hear about the MKE400 and got one immediately to take advantage of that extra reach.I'm really happy with it. It's exactly what I expected, an MKE200 but with extra reach. The same no fuss connectivity – DSLR and mobile compatible cables in the box (clearly marked) and a dead cat which in my MKE200 review I found to be of excellent quality. Beware the mic requires batteries – supplied – but you'll want to carry spares. Although so far I've used it for more than two days straight on a few jobs and I haven't yet had to swap the batteries. The big, big bonus is that (unlike the MKE200) is that I can also monitor sound directly from the mic. Peace of mind!As with MKE200 my only niggle (and reason for 4 stars on value) is the plastic cold shoe fitting – although to be fair I on price I don't have a like for like comparison and therefore the plastic fittings may be reflected in the price of the mic.If you're mounting the mic using the tripod mount then no problem, but the cold shoe mount is really hard to get tight enough and then to release afterwards – hacks for this would be appreciated. I find metal fixtures are best for this purpose. The Mic also has gain settings mounted on the mic itself – so far I've found low is too low and high is too noisy... maybe in some circumstances this might be useful but so far I've left it in the mid position. In short this is my all rounder. There are a couple of other mics I may use in certain situations but for on the go, no messing, great sound and this is my go to – without hesitation. And where I've recommended the MKE200 in the past (and still would for under £100 value) I would now point people to the MKE400 for that extra reach... you can take it away but you can't add it in afterwards. Highly recommended.

No use outdoors for me; cant handle wind noise even with dead-cat on
Really disappointed with this; should have believed the review where the guy stated he thought most of the 5 stars reviews were "influenced". Wind noise totally unacceptable even with dead cat on it, Rode micro is better. I also think I got a faulty one because after several hours of taking short videos clips I discovered that the first few had sound, the majority did not and then a few at the end of the session did??? I don't think it was a case of me pressing the on off button inadvertently because the batteries were apparently dead and they definitely didn't last 100 hours. With this in mind the location of the power button makes it vulnerable to switching it off by mistake I now prefer the idea of having the button on the rear to stop this so have gone for an alternative make.

Great Mic. Good value for money.
Great Mic. Good value for money. The package comes with everything you need including TRS / TRS and TRS / TRRS 3.5mm cables (for smart phone connection). The sound quality is very good with a good range. The weight is good as well, it is quite light. The shock absorbers for the mic are contained within the outer barrel of the mic. They buffer the mic well so unwanted noise is kept to a minimumComes with a good wind muffler. Make sure you connect the audio cable before putting the muffler on.It compliments my Canon 90D very well as you can see.Not compatible with my Gopro 8 unless you buy a 3rd party adaptor or use the Gopro media mod. I noted that if you sit this on the Gopro there is a noticeable over hang at the top of the lens, more so if the muffler is fitted.Comes with a good quality bag for mic and all the bits.A good purchase, very happy.

What a shame - Such a disappointment - DO NOT BUY!
I was really disappointed with this the first one arrived and it looked great, plugged it in and it worked perfectly. However as soon as it went near anything electrical there was bad feedback and humming recorded so much you could not use the footage. I asked for a replacement which arrived the next day thinking it was a faulty unit but no the same issue and also with the smaller version needless to say I have brought a different brand such a shame as the unit looks like it wod be awesome!

a bit too big and long and great sound for outdoors
a bit too big and long gets in the way of the video camera the sound is great its very focused and adjust the gain to pick up localised noise or a balance approach from front or behind
