You will need a topographic map and a lensatic compass. This by itself, probably won't help you much. Mark out 100 meters and start walking normally. Count everytime your left foot strikes the ground. When you get to the 100 meter point stop and write down your number. Do it at least one more time. The average of your interations is you pace count. Now, while land navigating by foot. You move one bead over on the big loop for every 100 meters that you walk. When you get to 10 beads, reset them and move 1 bead over on the small loop. This means you went 1 Kilometer. Keep doing this until you reach your point. If you don't do this, it is easy to forget how far you traveled after a while, especially if you are tired, and you will get lost. If you don't have these. You can do the same thing by carrying small rocks. Drop a rock or swap pockets for every 100 meters. Mark on a peice of paper every kilometer that you travel. If you are a Soldier or Marine with a combat job, or about to be one, get these. If not, then you probably won't use them very much
