The Design Way, second edition: Intentional Change in an Unpredictable World (Mit Press)

This book really gets to the heart of the matter and looks at the core of design as it's own and independent area of practice. Funny enough I read another review where they "criticize" the book as it doesn't take a specific point of view from a pigeon holed discipline written by a Phd Student - That is precisely the point and should be considered an accolade rather than a criticism. It is obvious from that review that they either didn't read Chapter 1 or they just don't get it. A good designer doesn't use one lens or only one view but is a bricoleur that understands that design is it's own practice - much like the artist or the scientist - the designer has tools, processes and skills that not only can but require the ability to use different lenses and approaches.Who should read this book? Anyone that believes in Thinking and taking action. - That thinking bit is the hardest part for some and the taking action the hardest part for others. - I would caution those that believe that there is only one way to do things to either consciously suspend that bias while reading this book or alternatively to intentionally "act as if" you were reading it from the point of view of someone capable of thinking on their own.This review may sound like I am an evangelist for this book - I am of sorts. I have now bought many copies and given them away to clients and friends in my work as a strategic designer, business model designer, service designer, product designer and experience designer... I point out the different areas of design as this is one of the very few books that's concepts are applicable to the Design Profession as whole. It should be required reading in all business, science fields as well as design and art schools.

Nobody I have read comes close to Harold Nelson's degree of insight into the design way. It is worthy of close study and refection. Having had the great pleasure of spending several days with Harold I found him to be a humble man of exceptional depth and intellect. The Design Way represents his insights from many years of deep study and immersion in the world of systems thinking and design - it is as they say "a classic".

Was lucky enough to have Dr. Stolterman as a professor one semester. Very intelligent man, and his writing is very refreshing. Great intro to design thinking.

This is a superb book that should be included in each and every design course. Excellent for those who design engineered systems.

My 2nd edition copy of this book is full of useful and compelling insight for the new product developer/designer. I find it to be a good companion to books on innovation by Clayton Christensen and consider it to be a "must have" for anyone trying to improve new product performance and success rates.

Great book so far, but the used copy I bought was in awful shape. Ink stains in it and pen markups almost every page. :(

A systematic and thorough setting out of a comprehensive view of design thinking. It is now required reading in all my design units for architecture, landscape architecture and urban design students.My own concern is with helping student designers develop their own voice as designers, avoiding working against their own predilections. This book provides an excellent scaffolding for their thinking.

Great book. Illuminating regarding aspects concerning technological and creative changing processes. One of the best book in the field. I would suggest anyone Is interested in design and technology.
