Why did you pick this product vs others?: Lamy sets a high bar for fountain pens. Affordable while looking expensive, these pens write beautifully. My penmanship is not great and I originally bought a Lamy fountain pen to force myself to write slower and concentrate. The added benefit is that I get plenty of comments on how nice they look!

This is my first fountain pen. I can't believe how fun it is to use! I find myself writing things now for no reason. Gotta make a grocery list? This pen makes it fun. I watched a few YouTube videos, and it seemed like the Safari was the go to do it all fountain pen for beginners. They weren't lying! I have not tried a plastic barrel, but this aluminum one feels very high-quality and cold to the touch when you pick it up. It's the little things!

The color looks a bit different in real than on the pictures, it‘s more sheer. Lamy is always great though!

Let me start by saying that this pen is made out of aluminum AND DOES CONDUCT ELECTRICITY! I was given a quick shock the other day, not thinking about it, when I was using my Lamy Safari Al-star to fish a strawberry Pop-Tart out of the toaster. Besides that, this is a totally safe pen and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a shred of style and decency. The Lamy Safari Al-star is more than just another fountain pen, it is a philosophy. This utilitarian apparatus allows you to swap out the nib, barrel, cap... well, just about everything! It comes with a lifetime warranty to back this all up, which is great, as I often write my poetry in extreme conditions, in order to provoke feeling. All you have to do is send it on over Germany! Ideally you will have a back up, as you may occasionally find your pen partaking in a transcontinental journey for a little fix-me-up, and it will arrive back home as glorious as ever. The matte black body with a black clip is VERY STEALTHY. Upon glancing at my pen, people often ask me if I am in fact who I say I am, and not a secret agent. This is not uncommon in my line of work. Another stealthy advantage of the Lamy is that the nib is very quiet when it hits the paper. This might not be an issue for most people, but for gentlemen with sensitive eardrums such as myself, it is a godsend! Although you can get slightly cheaper fountain pens, they will likely leak, bend, or make terrible scratching noises as they besmirch your stationery and repress your creativity. I am proud to say that my Lamy Safari Al-star does not leak one bit! The only issues experienced with the Lamy have been due to the personal ignorance of your correspondent. The little ink window is not only adorable, it allows insight into the status of your ink cartridge. I would recommend either the Z10 or the Z24, unless you want to use one of the abhorrent disposable ink refills that the pen comes with. Now, I know what you are asking yourself and the answer is no: The Lamy Safari Al-Star will not fit an International ink cartridge, so don't even try it, you curious rascals! This is a slight downfall but it certainly does not diminish my love for this impeccable device.

Very nice to write with. If it feels scratchy to you try switching paper. Felt scratchy on my legal pads but on my college ruled paper it’s as smooth as my expensive waterman.
