Q: I'm 5'8, 250 lbs. What size should I get?

I’m about the same and I got the 2x. They shrunk a little when I washed them.

Q: It says cotton & spandex so they are thin like t-shirt material or more like sweat pant material

They are more like a medium thick t shirt. Very comfortable I do wear my blouses over the pants. I would rebuy these pants.

Q: Are these a workout fit or a "fashion leggings" where you shouldn't wear them without a shirt to cover the top?

I wear these casually with a t- shirt and I've also worn them with a nice longer blouse and sandals out to a restaurant. So they can be casual or dressy. I wouldn't work out in these. They are very comfortable!
