Step Up: Lead in Six Moments that Matter

STEP UP should be required reading for anyone who works with people in the private sector or in government. All to often those cast into "NEW" leadership positions are ill prepared for what they are about to encounter. Stubborn ""OLD SCHOOL" employers think they know what is best and will mold the NEW leader the old school ways. This is exactly why we have a stalemate of innovative ideas in some companies and in government. STEP UP offers brilliant points accompanied with relatable examples which are solution based. STEP UP encourages critical thinking for the long term and offers a glimpse of how much we can all gain if we embrace this new culture.

Henry Evans and Colm Foster did an excellent job providing a new and unique look at how leaders should react in critical moments. As an executive who is known for being a "hard charger" and very driven, most books or experts on leadership focus on how to eliminate these traits so that they don't show up as anger or you becoming too forceful. I always felt inauthentic in trying to change who I am at my core and Step Up was the first attempt I have seen that takes a different look and shows practical steps in making sure your "angry but not stupid" and also suggest some tangible steps to take and capitalize on this as well as other emotions. My congratulations to Mr. Evans and Foster on an excellent perspective!

We are using Henry's team to help us with accountability based on his other book. When this came out I ordered it and instantly read it and wow it came in very handy and timely. As I was reading it I could see all the members of our team including myself. Hard to hide from some of your own pitfalls when Henry and Colm point them out so well in this book. I'm glad to add this one to my bookshelf of must read books. Thanks for all your help!

Very practical And clear examples of leadership moments that make a difference. I gave a copy to each person in a leadership workshop. Leadership is essentially about behavior and choices and this books pinpoints scenarios we all face daily. It provides teaching points and useful coaching for the person who wants to improve his or her skill as a leader.

What Henry Evans and Colm Foster characterize as a "leadership moment" is by no means limited to residents of the C-Suite. Just as effective leadership is needed at all levels and in all operational areas of an organization, leaders occur there as well and -- more often than not -- have serious implications and significant consequences, for better or worse. Evans and Foster identify six and devote a separate chapter to each. To learn to become intelligent while angry, you must start small -- that is, learn to retain your thinking ability when you are merely irritated and then move on frustration and so on." Whenever they sense that negative momentum is building, they immediately convert to a solution-oriented dialogue. (187)Obviously, no brief commentary can possibly do full justice to the abundance of information, insights, and counsel that Henry Evans and Colm Foster provide. However, I hope I have at least indicated why I think so highly of their book.
