The optimal distance for diffusion from most strip tape LEDs is about 4 inches. If multiple led strips are spaced farther apart than 4 inches than the distance to the diffusion should be equal to the led strip separation.

Q: Will one layer provide adequate diffusion for direct light of south facing windows in a photography studio?

Yes one layer will significantly soften the light, the larger the surface the softer the light, a reflector will most likely be needed if you shoot with the daylight. and color will be dependent on time of day and weather conditions.
