Q: Can these be used these to hold a 8x12 canvas while painting on it. Or is it just for display purposes

I would lean toward no...unfortunately I bought this to paint on and it leaves a divot in your canvas, its tippy and the feet are huge. Will work great for displays though!

Q: How thick are the two tabs on the bottom that hold the picture - we have some thick ones. Also do you have 17 of them?

The tabs are at least 2 inch deep. I think they come 6 in a pack

Q: I see that the canvas is placed horizontally on easel. Placing canvas vertically should work fit the same correct?

These were super sturdy. We placed vertical glass art pieces on them and they were just fine.

Q: Are the legs adjustable to make them taller?

No thery are not adjustable. Sorry
